INJURIES

Claims and fatalities:

Accidents by Cause:

INJURIES MEANS MONEY!

The direct costs of claims finalised, reported by the Federated Employers' Mutual Assurance Company (FEMA) amounted to about R116 million for 2007, implying indirect costs of around R1,65 billion. Similar figures from the Compensation Commission are not available, but it can be estimated that the total direct and indirect CoA in South Africa amounts to about R3,5 billion per year or around 2% of construction spend (GFCF).

WHO WILL YOU CHOOSE TO NURSE YOUR MOTHER?

MEDICAL SURVEILANCE: 

Of collecting, analysing and interpreting;

Physical and mental health data of a employee;

Based on work exposure and job requirements.

It Happens in various intervals: pre employment, perodical, exit, returning after long period of absence due to illness or injury, transfer to a new posistion.

MEDICALS: 

Based on the exposure of the employee as well as the requirements of the occupation.

Can be done by a OHP under supervision of a

OMP. 

Certificates of fitness needs to be signed by the OMP for the following occupations: - Crane operators - Operators of all construction vehicles and mobile plant - Employees on supported or suspended platforms

PSYCHOLOGICAL FITNESS: 

Employees should be in sound state of mind, appropriate to the level of responsibility of the task at hand.

There is no evidence to suggest that the inclusion of a pschologist will add value to determine the overall fitness of the employee. The examining practitioner should apply basic tests to draw a reasonable conclusion regarding the employee's psychological status, including: specific questions, clinical findings and laboratory tests if needed(drug/alcohol levels).
