As the curtain drew on March 20, 21, and 22 on the stage of Terre Haute North’s auditorium, a packed audience sat in anticipation as a simple wooded set appeared to them. On this stage sat a boy with his mother and a cow, a baker and his wife, and a girl dressed in rags. Shortly after the beginning of the musical,

the viewers realizes that these are your typical characters from your typical fairy tales. It was evident the audinence enjoyed the characters and their reactions to certain situations. At the same time, the musical taught important lessons to it’s audience. During an encounter between Little Red Riding Hood

and the Big Bad Wolf, ‘Little Red’ learned that nice and good aren’t quite the same thing. The musical included many twists and turns, like the narrator becoming involved in the story, and all of the traditional fairy tales meshing together to create one silly surprise ending. With a notable perfor-

mance by Sophomore Abby Cunning and Junior Savannah Richardson, Into the Woods was seen by the audience as a great success. By the time the curtain closed, the audience was giving both the cast and the orchestra a standing ovation. By Kevin Boling

Vigo County Staff is Simply the Best Being a teacher and administrator is not always all work and no play. On Thursday March 12, 2009, North, South, and West Vigo High Schools along with the Central Office played in the annual Simply the Best. Teachers from each school and administrators from the school corporation played in a basketball game to raise money for Hospice. Hospice is a Visiting Nurses Association that provides special care for terminally ill patients receiving care at home. “It’s always nice to have a school system, staff, and community that support various organizations like Hospice. It’s a very worthy cause. You know we take a lot of things for granted,“ commented Superintendent Mr. Dan Tanoos. Simply the Best had

a large participating staff and a great outcome. Some teachers were cheerleaders while other teachers and school administrators were basketball players. Boys’ basketball coach Mr. Todd Woefle said, “It’s a great time.” During the first quarter of the game North faced West Vigo and during the second quarter Central Office faced South. The second half of the game and the third quarter North faced South and West Vigo faced the Central Office in the fourth quarter. Half time was the highlight of the night. Several staff members from both North, South, and the School Administration danced to the Evolution of Dance taught by Junior Sarah Helman. “We practiced once a week for three weeks, and in

By Shelbie Schneider our spare time.” said HelNorth’s student section man. “They all listened cheers on the staff. to me, Mr.Hughes is scared of me because I critiqued him too much.” There was a lot of energy and excitement in the room until the very end of the game. However, in the end South and West Vigo won the entire game. Better luck next year North and Central Office! Mr. Michael Menser and Mr. Todd Woelfle compete in Simply the Best.

Imagination and creativity drove a select group of North students to victory in this year’s writing contests. Students showed off their skills by submitting poems and short stories to various contests. North had numer-

ous winners from the Vincennes Autumn Voices, The Voice of Democracy, and The Scottish Rite contests. Winners of the these contests include Bennet Terry, Andrea Steiger, Sarah Baugh, Brittany Keilly, Jon Drobny,

Tommy Foulkes, Hilliree Hicks, and Payton Brown. Such prizes for the winners were an all-expense paid trip, scholarship money, and their work published in magazines. Junior Hilliree Hicks won for her

poem, “Weekend” in the Autumn Voices Writing Contest. Hicks entered the contest for her final in Mr. Petty’s creative writing class and, won much to her surprise. “I was pretty excited,” said Hicks. “I have never won anything for poems or anything like that so I thought it was really cool.” Creative writing teacher Mr. Petty says,”Every year we do well at Vincennes, and this year’s winners are among the best.” Congratulations to all of the winners. If you are interested in entering a writing contest, talk to your English teacher.

Someone’s Always Watching By Patricia Beddow

When George Orwell wrote his novel 1984, the idea of something or someone watching and restricting our every move was both frightening and laughable. The things he talked about were fictional at the time, but with advances in technology it’s becoming more real every day. Is it possible that Orwell’s worst nightmare is coming true in the

very halls of the places where his works are read and taught as a warning toward certain advances? In schools all over the country, including ours, we have to have rules restricting the things that we do, say, and wear. On top of that, we have both signs that remind us of these rules and cameras that constantly watch us to make sure that we are following these rules. Though some are prob-

ably horrified by this, personally, I believe we need the rules and security measures. In our world, violence is a present theme in every facet of life. TV shows, video games, and even the news are full of violence. School should be one of the places where we feel safe, and in a generation that has witnessed such atrocities as the school shootings at Columbine and Virginia

Tech, safety precautions like having rules and cameras are very necessary. Sure, some of the rules are just to make us all appear more professional, but if you stop to consider the safety precautions behind most of the rules, they seem much more reasonable. The next time you start to question the rules, think about the reasons behind them. It may suprise you.

minutes left for lunch. This has happened to me time and time again. I never recalled getting lunch taking so long in the past, so I decided to scout out the other lunches to see how crowded they are and find out how many classes are in each lunch. I found at the beginning of the third trimester that there were 42 classes in A lunch, 23

in B lunch, 31 in C, and 31 in D lunch. Though they had changed the classes around a little; A, C, and D are much more crowded than B is. When I scouted out the lunches I noticed that in B lunch the hallways around the pool were very scarce and that there were approximately 10 tables completely empty. Assistant Principal Mr. Gauer

stated they have noticed the overcrowding and the reason is that the math and science departments require either A lunch or D lunch and that they are both very crowded. He also explained that B and C lunch tend to be smaller. When asked if there will be any more changes to the lunches he concluded there will be no further arrangements.

Letter to the Editor Dear Dan and Kevin, Cleanliness is very important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In today’s society, several sicknesses can be caught by not washing hands. You may have noticed that the sinks in the school bathrooms are very hard to operate. To operate the sinks in the school bathrooms, you have to push and hold down the button while you clean one hand at a time. There is a simple solution to this. Just do away with the button, and install handles that turn to make the water run. This way, people won’t have to touch the dirty buttons over and over again, and people will actually be able to wash both hands at one time. Every time I go to the bathroom, it is very crowded, and there aren’t very many sinks in one bathroom. A simple solution is to install an extra sink in the busiest bathrooms such as the bathrooms in Constitution Hall, Independence Hall, and the bathrooms by the Guidance Office. By adding an ext5ra sink, traffic in the bathroom will flow, and students will not worry about being late for class.

Even the school does not go through with the ideas above, some of the sinks don’t work as it is. Just fixing those few sinks will help a lot. Sincerely, Julian Shamsaie Class of 2012

105 Words About Shoeboxes

By Patricia Beddow Shoeboxes-those wonderful treasure troves that your shoes called home before they moved into your closet. Sure, when you make a robot out of cardboard boxes, they can’t be the main part, but they succeed their lifelong dream of being shoes. Shoeboxes were like safety deposit boxes when we were kids-all of our worldly possessions fit inside and were kept secret to the outside world. Shoeboxes are probably the most abundant of the cardboard boxes on the planet. Anyone who has ever owned a pair of shoes has had the pleasure of owning a multipurpose magic box. The trouble is how many people really recognize that?

Everyone remembers the tiny old Baskin Robbins not far from school. Well, that is old news now. Even though the new and improved Baskin Robbins hasn’t moved far from the old one, the new look rocks. There is so much more room to sit and it is much cleaner. It’s rather odd that they decided to move it next door to a fitness place, but I guess it works out better for some people. No doubt you’ve heard the stories about the new iPhone 3G, but the experience is not that different from an old iPhone. The new iPhone boasts many new and improved features, with a lighter weight. Perhaps the most tantalizing part about this new iPhone is the price, starting at $199.00 for an 8 Gigabyte model. “If I want to know something, it’s right there at the tips of my

He’s Just Not That into You©

By Patricia Beddow

Since the dawn of time, people have been thinking up excuses to avoid the reality of rejection. From “he’s only mean to you because he likes you” to maybe he lost my number”, there is always a defense for being snubbed. In He’s Just Not That Into You, they say it plain and clear. “If he doesn’t call, he’s just not that into you.” The movie takes place in Baltimore and is centered around Gigi (played by Ginnifer Goodwin), a woman who has trouble understanding guys. After failing to see

that real estate agent Conner (Kevin Connelly) had rejected her, she meets Alex, who happens to be Conner’s roommate and an expert in interpreting rejections. Gigi begins sharing this information with her coworkers, Janine (Jennifer Connelly) and Beth (Jennifer Aniston). Janine is married to Ben (Bradley Cooper), who is friends with Beth’s boyfriend of seven years Neil (Ben Affleck). Scarlett Johansson and Drew Barrymore star in the movie as well, playing Anna, who causes problems

in Ben and Janine’s marriage, and Anna’s friend, Mary, a journalist who has trouble finding love. He’s Just Not That Into You is a romantic comedy that everyone will enjoy and be able to connect with on some level. Contrary to what the name suggests, the characters you root for from the beginning get their happily ever after. Though most romantic movies fall under the rule of cheesy, He’s Just Not That Into You is definitely the exception.
