UGA-­‐Duke  TIP  Academic  Adventures   Class  Descriptions     March  21,  2015     Aircraft  &  Spacecraft  Design     Explore  the  amazing  world  of  flight,  and  see  how  aircrafts  and  spacecrafts  are  designed  and   tested.  You  will  discover  how  scientific  principles,  such  as  energy,  momentum,  pressure,  and   gravity,  have  led  to  incredible  advances  in  aerospace  technology.  Experiment  with  various   structural,  propulsion  and  control  system  designs,  and  take  part  in  hands-­‐on  activities  like   designing,  assembling,  and  flying  styrofoam  gliders,  launching  two-­‐liter  compressed  air/water   rockets,  and  trying  out  flight  gear  used  by  Air  Force  test  pilots.  Come  find  out  what  it  means  to   make  something  fly!     Biomedical  Engineering  –  New!   Have  you  ever  wondered  just  what  does  a  biomedical  engineer  do?  How  can  biomedical   engineers  support  an  area  of  people  dealing  with  a  virus  pandemic  such  as  the  flu,  or  even   Ebola?  With  this  class,  students  will  learn  of  the  methods  of  spreading  viruses  and  how  to   prevent  them.  Students  will  also  learn  about  the  field  of  biomedical  engineering  and  its  impact   on  the  science  field.  With  this  problem-­‐based  class,  participants  will  become  biomedical   engineers  as  they  research  and  create  tools  that  could  be  used  to  prevent  the  spread  of  a  virus.   By  understanding  the  occupation  of  a  biomedical  engineer  and  how  they  work  to  build  the   bridges  between  engineering  and  the  medical  field,  students  will  be  motivated  to  discover  and   invent  things  that  could  benefit  their  world.    Using  everyday  items  such  as  gauze,  plastic  cups,   string,  paper  clips,  tape,  and  a  host  of  other  items,  students  will  design  and  create  practical   facial  masks  that  can  be  used  to  protect  people  that  live  in  an  area  where  a  pandemic  is   thriving.  Students'  will  promote  their  own  masks  with  mini-­‐commercials  and  masks  will  be   tested,  evaluated,  and  displayed.  After  this  class,  the  flu’s  got  nothing  on  you!     Bugbot  Design   Interested  in  the  endless  ways  to  build  and  work  with  a  robot?  In  this  introduction  to  robotics   course,  students  will  gain  an  overview  of  selected  robotic  design  concepts  such  as  mechanical   components  (plates,  brackets,  linkages  and  fasteners),  mechanical  gear  reduction  system  for   electric  motors  and  conversion  of  rotational  circular  motion  to  a  “walking”  or  “crawling”   motion.  Spend  a  day  building  two  different  robots,  one  with  a  simple  electrical  motor  for  power   and  one  under  computer  control  using  pre-­‐installed  programs  allowing  the  robot  to  follow  a   closed  path,  detect  an  obstacle  or  be  remotely  controlled.   The  student  will  need  to  purchase  his  or  her  own  robotic  kit  called  the  “Ollo  Bug  Robot  Kit”   (available  from  Amazon  when  you  search  “OLLO  Bug  Robot  Kit”  and  several  online  vendors   including  Trossen  Robotics  here:  http://www.trossenrobotics.com/ollo-­‐bug-­‐kit.aspx)  .  These   “bugbots”  will  be  assembled  in  class  by  the  students.        

Conspiracy  Theories  101  –  New!   Do  you  believe  we  put  a  man  on  the  moon?    What  secrets  are  hidden  in  Roswell,  New   Mexico?    Who  was  Lee  Harvey  Oswald?    If  you’ve  ever  asked  yourself  these  questions,  then   Conspiracy  Theory  101  may  be  for  you.    In  this  class  we  will  explore  three  major  conspiracy   theories  that  still  prevail  today—the  moon  landing,  the  alien  landing  in  Roswell,  New  Mexico,   and  the  JFK  assassination.    Using  proven  scientific  theories  in  physics  and  astronomy,  forensic   investigation  techniques,  and  primary  source  evidence,  students  will  dive  into  these   conspiracies  to  uncover  the  truth.    Are  the  rumors  true?    Come  take  a  closer  look  and  decide  for   yourself!         Crazy  Chemistry  –  New!   Ever  wonder  what  it  means  when  they  say  the  cereal  is  IRON  fortified?    Am  I  eating  nails  for   breakfast?    Ivory  soap  floats  while  other  soaps  sink.    Why  is  that?    In  other  countries  diet  sodas   are  called  Lite.    Does  that  mean  they  weigh  less  than  regular  sodas?  How  is  it  possible  to  get  a   giant  boiled  egg  into  a  small  necked  juice  bottle?    Discover  the  science  secrets  while  performing   some  crazy  chemistry  experience  with  everyday  objects  and  events.    Learn  how  to  make  naked   eggs  and  flying  potatoes.    Transform  ordinary  into  amazing  as  we  make  household  items   bubble,  fizz,  ooze  and  pop!     Electrical  Engineering  –  New!   Do  did  ever  think  that  you  could  build  a  flashlight  out  of  a  soda  can?  You  can  and  you  will  during   this  class!  Along  with  making  your  own  battery  packs  and  figuring  out  how  to  run  electricity   from  battery  to  bulb!  Come  and  explore  the  world  of  electrical  engineering  as  you  make  series   and  parallel  circuits,  learn  about  switches  and  make  your  own  upstairs/downstairs  circuits.   Learn  the  concepts  of  circuitry  to  then  try  it  yourself  immediately!  You  will  surely  leave  “lit  up”   as  you  conquer  the  world  of  circuits  and  electricity  in  this  en”light”ening  class.       Engineering  Design  Process-­‐  New!   Ever  wonder  what  the  exact  process  an  engineer  goes  through  to  design  and  create  anything?   Did  you  know  that  there  are  particular  steps,  processes  and  metrics  to  walk  through  whether   you  are  designing  a  bridge,  a  parachute  or  a  roller  coaster.  Come  and  learn  this  design  process   and  start  to  think  like  an  engineer  as  you  are  challenged  by  many  building  challenges  yourself!   Have  your  group  compete  against  other  groups  in  a  Rube  Goldberg  challenge,  egg  drop  designs   and  more.  Use  this  skill  and  process  indefinitely  from  here  on  out,  as  you  hone  and  articulate   your  skill  as  an  engineer.       Goo  Gas  Great  Balls  of  Fire!  –  New!   Put  your  safety  googles  on  for  this  one!  Spend  the  day  making  LOTS  of  cool  chemical  and   physical  reactions  like  your  own  GAC,  dinosaur  toothpaste,  cold  and  hot  salt,  flame  tests  and   more.  You  will  spend  the  day  safely  making  explosive  reactions  as  your  learn  about  chemical   reactions,  color  changing  acids,  and  then  you  will  cool  down  as  you  experiment  and  explore  dry   ice!  Learn  about  florescence  and  what  exactly  is  a  black  light  and  how  it  works.  This  is  not  your   average  science  class!    

Magical  Murder     The  law  of  the  Ministry  of  Magic,  which  coincidentally  copied  the  American  legal  system,  is   swift  and  just.  Harry  Potter  stands  accused  of  criminal  homicide.  The  victim…Lord  Voldemort!   Learn  the  basics  of  trial  advocacy  and  legal  analysis,  and  utilize  those  skills  to  argue  for  or   against  Mr.  Potter.  Public  speaking,  group  work,  creative  thinking,  and  logic  will  set  the  stage   for  the  trial  of  the  century!  Muggles  welcome,  witches  and  wizards  preferred.     MineCraft  Programming  and  Logic!  –  New!   Spend  the  day,  conceptualizing    writing  and  debuging  your  very  own  program  for  MineCraft  and   ComputerCraft!  In  this  class,  students  will  learn  programming  skills  using  the  LUA  scripting   language  for  ComputerCraft,  a  program  which  adds  robots  and  computers  to  the  world   of  MineCraft.  LUA  language  is  a  fully  featured  and  freely  available  programming  language  that   can  be  used  to  write  applications  and  games.  A  perfect  springboard  for  learning  more  complex   languages  like  Java,  C++  and  others.  You  will  learn  variables,  functions,  conditional  statements,   loops,  all  the  while  honing  your  typing  skills  and  practicing  to  be  the  next  best  programmer  of   your  generation.  Get  instant  satisfaction  as  you  see  your  results  immediately  as  you  design  and   program  in  this  class.       Mini  Vet  School   Is  it  your  dream  to  work  with  animals?  In  Mini  Vet  School  you  will  not  only  learn  about  the   many  different  career  opportunities  in  the  field  of  animal  health  care  and  veterinary  medicine,   but  you  will  get  hands-­‐on  experience  with  actual  animal  case  studies.  Study  canine  anatomy   and  learn  about  body  systems  and  how  they  may  be  affected  by  disease.  Study  the  physiology   and  anatomy  of  common  pets,  and  then  take  it  one  step  further  by  learning  to    read   radiographs.  Here  test  your  skills  at  identifying  broken  bones,  swallowed  nails  and  other  real   life  situations  a  veterinarian  encounters  on  a  daily  basis!     Problem  Solving  Pro-­‐  New!   Got  problems?    Want  to  figure  out  how  to  best  collaborate  with  others  to  solve  problems  of   today  and  the  future?    Explore  your  problem  solving  style,  engage  in  team  building  activities,   apply  creative  and  critical  thinking  tools,  and  explore  “what  if”  situations.    Experience  a  day   jam-­‐packed  with  interactive  activities  to  stretch  your  problem  solving  skills  to  new  levels.    Any   problem  can  be  solved  with  the  right  tools  –  leave  this  session  equipped  with  a  toolbox  full  of   techniques  for  tackling  problems  of  any  size!       Secret  Agent  Scientist     Have  you  ever  wanted  to  solve  mysteries?  In  this  class  we  will  explore  forensic  science  and   apply  the  scientific  method  to  solve  mysteries.  We’ll  learn  to  think  like  a  detective,  and  apply   critical  thinking  skills  to  find  evidence  and  make  inferences  and  hypotheses.  We  will  use   chromatography  techniques  to  identify  which  marker  was  used  to  write  a  secret  message,   discover  the  secrets  behind  invisible  ink,  create  scientific  tests  to  identify  mysterious   substances,  and  even  take  fingerprints.    Any  mystery  can  be  solved  when  there  is  science   involved!    

  Social  ME-­‐dia  –  New!   Did  you  ever  realize  the  amazing  power  that  lies  within  your  hands  when  you  hold  a  smart   phone  or  iPad?  Did  you  ever  wonder  how  Facebook  knew  that  you  were  in  need  of  the  exact   thing  they  were  advertising  to  you?  As  a  student  of  this  generation,  you  are  on  the  cutting  edge   of  a  brand  new  world  of  social  media  marketing  –  both  as  a  consumer  and  an  advertiser  (even  if   you  don’t  think  so).  Come  and  spend  the  day  examining  how  different  brands  approach   marketing  through  the  lens  of  social  media  and  the  unique  and  creative  ways  that  they  use  the   new  technologies  available  to  them.  Don’t  just  use  Instagram,  Twitter,  Facebook  and  more  –  come  to  investigate  these  platforms  and  examine  how  each  is  best  used.  Leave  empowered  by   the  knowledge  of  how  to  approach  both  social  media  and  marketing  in  an  exciting  and  powerful   new  way.       Solar  Powered  House   Want  to  harness  the  energy  of  the  sun?  Want  to  try  your  hand  in  designing  something  “green”?   Good!   Whose   house   will   be   the   warmest?   Whose   house   will   have   working   electricity?   Come   and   do   your   best   to   design   and   activate   a   fully   “solar   powered   house”.   Spend   the   day,   learning   about   this   alternative   energy   source,   then   try   your   hand   at   designing   circuits,   creating   structures  to  harness  the  sun’s  energy,  and  eventually  light  the  bulb  in  your  constructed  home!   This   will   be   a   class   dedicated   to   looking   at   different   types   of   energy,   while   at   the   same   time,   giving  you  a  first-­‐hand  opportunity  to  test  your  knowledge  and  your  skills.  Future  architects  and   engineers  welcome!     Sports  Medicine       Come  and  see  a  new  side  of  sports,  the  medical  side!  Examine  the  diagnosis,  treatment,  and   prevention  of  common  sports  injuries.  In  addition  to  discussing  why  these  three  components   are  critical  to  the  care  of  athletes,  you  will  also  learn  the  practices  and  skills  needed  to  address   each  one.  Whether  you  are  asked  to  perform  basic  upper  extremity  taping,  simulated  first  aid,   cranial  nerve  testing  or  more,  you  will  not  stay  seated  for  long!  Then  you  will  test  your   knowledge  and  newly  learned  skills  in  rehab  “Olympics”  where  you  will  compete  with  your   peers  to  quickly  replicate  challenges  injured  athletes  might  face.     The  Biology  of  Happiness     Where   did   soda   get   its   start?   What   is   it   about   chocolate   that   makes   you   love   it   so   much?   Why  do  you  love  hanging  out  with  your  friends,  or  why  do  you  get  “addicted”  to  acing  your   tests?   What   anatomical   features   are   responsible   for   our   personality   and   pleasure?   Come   to   learn   about   “natural   drugs”   that   you   might   experience   every   day   that   can   be   induced   by   simple  things  like  serving  others,  going  running  or  petting  your  dog.  Learn  how  the  history   of  pharmacology  has  been  able  to  extract  certain  hormones  and  elements  common  in  our   body  systems  to  manipulate  and  to  serve  the  medical  world  -­‐  and  what  products  we  have   now  (like  Coke)  because  of  it!  Then  try  your  own  hand  at  mixing  compounds,  labeling  your   “product”   and   collaborating   with   other   classmates   to   produce   a   mini   Pharmaceutical   laboratory.    

The  Physics  of  Roller  Coasters   Discover  the  wonderful  world  of  physics  through  the  thrill  of  the  roller  coaster!  We’ll  look   at   the   history   and   design   of   roller   coasters,   and   explore   the   physics   that   make   these   exciting  rides  possible  –  gravity,  velocity,  potential  and  kinetic  energy,  friction,  centripetal   acceleration,  g-­‐force  and  clothoid  loop.  You’ll  have  the  chance  to  experiment  and  perform   hands-­‐on  projects  as  you  build  models  to  simulate  different  thrilling  effects.     Walk  Like  an  Egyptian  –  New!   Take  a  walk  with  us  as  we  wade  into  the  rich  history,  literature  and  art  of  ancient  Egyptian   culture.    Try  your  hand  at  translating  hieroglyphics,  investigate  an  ancient  crime  with  a  trial   under  Hammurabi’s  Code,  and  test  your  cartography  skills  as  you  build  a  topographic  map  of   ancient  Egypt.  You  will  become  not  only  a  budding  Egyptologist,  but  a  artistic  historian  behind   your  royal  Pharaoh  headdress  as  you  enact  and  learn  more  about  this  ancient  culture,  its   unique  languages,  customs,  rituals  and  more.
