Saint Mary’s University, 923 Robie Street Minutes Joint Occupational Health and Safety Meeting held on March 21, 2017. Kim Squires opened the meeting at 10:37 a.m. in the Human Resources Boardroom. Approval of Minutes of Last Meeting

Gary Schmeisser moved to accept the minutes of the February 21, 2017 meeting, and Colin Sutton seconded the motion. 2.0

Outstanding Items from Previous Meeting

JOHSC Training

Kevin Kelloway

Kevin Kelloway advised he will deliver a shorter version (1.5 hours) of the “S.A.F.E.R. Leadership” training to the three safety committees at 10:30 a.m., on March 30, 2017 and April 6, 2017. The Senior Management Group will also be invited. Action: Valerie Wadman to advise safety committees. Kim Squires to invite the Senior Management Group.

First Aid recertification training

Valerie Wadman

Valerie Wadman advised that Chapter 6 has been updated based on recommendations from the safety committees. As a description of Violence Prevention is contained in this chapter, she recommended that the distribution of these changes wait until the Violence Prevention program has been completed. The JOHSC agreed. Action: Valerie Wadman will revise the chapter, based on the new Violence Prevention plan, when the plan has been approved. (Deferred to April, 2017 meeting). JOHSC Committee membership and Terms of Reference Review

Valerie Wadman has contacted Dr. Arla Day to find out if she will move from being the alternate to be the member. Kim Squires advised that Marie DeYoung will replace Dr. Vessey. Action:

Annual Update – Fire Plan/Drills

Gary Schmeisser advised that he not received feedback from the JOHSC. Action:

NAOSH Week

Valerie Wadman

Valerie Wadman has advised that plans for a Threads of Life speaker to speak during NAOSH Week are in place. The CSSE (Canadian Society of Safety Engineering) will hold the annual NAOSH Symposium on May 8, 2017. Kim Squires will pay for a member of the JOHSC and the Administrative Units Sub-committee to attend the symposium. Action:

Valerie Wadman will keep the committee updated.

3.0 Other Minutes and Reports Academic Units Sub-committee

The committee met on February 27, 2017. Minutes will be available for review after the next meeting on March 27, 2017 Administration Units Sub-committee

The Childcare Facility JOHSC is not scheduled to meet until April, 2017. Contractor Documentation

No contractor documentation was posted for committee review. (From previous minutes) Valerie Wadman advised that the Contractor safety chapter has been revised based on feedback received, and in consultation with Gary Schmeisser. The JOHSC agreed that this chapter be re-issued when the Emergency Preparedness chapter is re-issued. Action:

Valerie Wadman to re-issue revised OHS program chapter at a later date.

International Travel

Kevin Vessey

Valerie Wadman confirmed she advised the Dean of Arts of the travel registry. Marie DeYoung advised that there is nothing new to report. Risk Management

Gary Schmeisser

Gary Schmeisser advised he and Valerie Wadman are continuing to meet with Athletics and Recreation staff to complete a risk assessment of various activities. Violence in the Workplace Review

Kevin Kelloway

Valerie Wadman advised that she is still working on revising the draft plan to incorporate recommendations from the JOHSC. Kevin Kelloway advised that SMUFU will make a recommendation to include the safe work practices from the Violence plan and information on the policy in new faculty orientation. 4.0

Injury and Incident Reports

The February, 2017 incident reports and graph were posted for review. 5.0

Workplace Inspection/Hazard Identification

Valerie Wadman advised that the annual workplace inspection forms will be sent out in April, 2017. 6.0
