One Great Hour Offering Easter Sunday, April 8th Since 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God’s love with people experiencing need. Our gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives and work together to strengthen their families and communities. Recognizing that the hope we have in Christ is lived out in our hope for one another, we respond with gifts that help our sisters and brothers around the world find the hope for a brighter future. Where does the money go? The Presbyterian Hunger Program receives 36 percent of undesignated One Great Hour of Sharing gifts, while the Self-Development of People and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance each receive 32 percent.

Oh What a Beautiful Musical! Oh, What a Beautiful Show!

The seats are empty, the hall is dark, the curtain is drawn and the stage is quiet. But if you listen closely, you can still hear the applause… the laughter... and a familiar melody still echoes inside your head… And what a show it was! Over 600 tickets were sold, with the largest crowd packing the house for the Sunday matinee. A tremendous amount of gratitude and thanks is owed to all the parents who helped in so many ways to make the performances a success (especially in taking the time to transport the actors and actresses to and from the numerous rehearsals over the past few months). Extra special thanks goes to the members of the Over The Hill Gang for their work constructing the fabulous sets that helped to transport us back in time to turn-of-the-century Oklahoma. The youth musical would not have been possible without the enormous contribution of time, energy and talent of many who helped, especially our artistic director, Dena Kimberling, music director Bevan Keating, accompanist Jane Gordon, co-producer Tammy May, prop designer Brenda Mallory, costumer Kelly Ball, character development coach Bill Downs, and Second Presbyterian’s Facilities Manager, David Beach. Thanks for a great show! We’ll see you next year! 4

On Thursday evening, March 8, Nancy and Warren Boop were honored for their long commitment and support of Presbyterian Village during a celebration at the Arts Center. In addition to all their other commitments at Second and in the community, Warren has served a number of years on the Presbyterian Village Board of Directors. Hundreds of friends, including many from Second, came out on a stormy night to celebrate. Steve Hancock offered words of tribute to Nancy and Warren on behalf of the congregation. The Village also announced that evening the beginning of the Dr. and Mrs. Warren Boop Memory Care Program. The new Memory Care Program will build on The Village’s current services for all their residents. A recent survey at The Village showed that of the 160 residents at that time, 43% had a dementia diagnosis. Although there are no cures for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, there are a variety of ways to help those with dementia live fuller, less anxious lives. Therapy using light stimulation, aroma, music, plants, pets, and massage will be developed and expanded for all residents. The Village is forming an advisory group including Warren and other professionals in this field to assist them in expanding existing services and creating new ones. The Village expects to care for a growing number of residents with memory issues in coming years, and is also committed to helping prevent or delay those symptoms in other residents. Funds raised at the event at the Arts Center will be used to begin these services. If you wish to honor Warren and Nancy, gifts to the Memory Care Program may be sent to Presbyterian Village Foundation. For more information, please contact David King at The PV Foundation, 225-1615.

As you may have noticed, the good work of some committed volunteers has paid off and the gardens are looking really great. They still need tender loving care and all that means is a willing heart and some of your time. We have divided the different gardens into teams and you can work on a team that will set the time to work based on everyone's schedule. We are only asking for 1-3 hours a month of your time and the benefits are great - Great fellowship and the knowledge that you can make Second Presbyterian inviting and beautiful at the same time.

We know that learning is enhanced by fun. It’s FUNdamental! Kids gravitate toward what is fun. Effective education taps in to this. “A playful path is the shortest road to happiness.” – author unknown Kids come to camp for fun and in the course of events they learn new skills, selfconfidence, grow friendships and explore what it means to live in harmony with their Creator. Since the camp experience is full of sights, sounds, experiences and fun, it makes an impression on children that lasts a lifetime. Jesus didn’t choose a classroom setting for sharing the Good News. Jesus chose the small group, roundthe-clock, experiential learning model. Jesus conducted camp with his disciples. Children need meaningful mentors beyond their parents. Enthusiastic young adult counselors fill this important role. In our backyard we have one of the best Presbyterian summer camps in the nation. Ferncliff has a national reputation for creative programming, quality staff, creation care, and mission focus. There is a wide variety of camps to choose from throughout the weeks of June and July. Registration has recently opened. Go to www.ferncliff.org and look for a fun week of camp for your kids – or family camp for the whole family. It can make a long lasting, positive impact on their lives. It is a place where faith and fun flourish together.

TELL ME THE STORIES OF SECOND… The foundations of Second Presbyterian church are built on the stories of those who, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, formed the congregation nearly 130 years ago, and the stories of those who built and developed it under that same guidance. The Heritage Committee has been at work researching and collecting those stories. Did you know that the brother-in-law of our first pastor was later president of the United States? Or that Second may have been the first southern Presbyterian congregation to call a pastor from the north after the Civil War? You may have heard about long-time pastor Hay Watson Smith. What were his connections to Second before he became pastor? Members of the Heritage Committee have been at work for several years finding new information and organizing old records and photos. We would love to show you the results of that effort in the Heritage Room. And if you are interested in our ongoing work, contact Jon Davies at [email protected], or Karen Akin, [email protected].
