20 March 2015 Dear Parents/Carers I am writing to you with some further updates and reminders as we near the end of the Spring term. Inspire and Achieve: Open Evening / Early Closure: Our Open Evening on Tuesday 24 March 5-7 p.m. is for new and existing parents to come and talk to us about what Wellfield has to offer children. We will be asking for pupil volunteers to assist on this evening as our pupils are fantastic ambassadors of the school. All prefects are expected to attend as part of their role. In order for us to prepare for the evening we will be closing the school earlier at 12.30 p.m. on Tuesday 24 March. Lunch service will be available at 12.30 p.m. for pupils and they are asked to order their lunches at breaktime on Tuesday. Wellfield World Book Day: We are holding our World Book Day on Wednesday 25 March. Pupils and staff are asked to come dressed as a character from a book. There will be prizes for the best costumes. This is not a non-uniform day and we want pupils to creatively get involved and celebrate books dressed in innovative costumes. STEM Week: This week pupils have had presentations and workshops about various aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We have had Preston College in talking about design; a Year 8 Faraday Challenge using code to communicate, and Year 10 have been quizzing engineers from NSG, Leyland Trucks and BAE Systems in an “Engineer in a Chair”. We have also hosted a Primary School Bridge Building competition. Congratulations to the runners up Moss Side and Trinity primary schools and the winners, Seven Stars Primary School. South Ribble High Schools Art Exhibition: Three pupils received commendations in the South Ribble High Schools Art Exhibition. There was a wide range of our pupils’ art work exhibited at the event and J Barnes, M Fowle and C Molloy were commended by the judges for their art work. We will again be holding an exhibition in school in the Summer term to display our GCSE Art and Photography work. Second Defibrillator in School: Following the Quiz Night last year that was held in conjunction with our Friends of Wellfield and HSBC we raised over £1300. We have therefore been able to purchase a second defibrillator for the school that will be located in the Sports Hall. This will benefit not only our pupils and staff during school hours but also our community users after school. We have also successfully managed to secure funding with the British Heart Foundation to purchase 35 resuscitation kits for pupils to be able to practice CPR techniques. In addition, we have organised training for all pupils on Monday 20 April with the North West Ambulance Service. We hope in the future to be able to roll this training into primary schools for their pupils’ to develop important life skills. Challenge Chocolate Bingo - Tonight: Our Friends of Wellfield Chocolate Bingo is tonight at Leyland RAF Club at 7.15 p.m., £1 entry plus a free raffle. Lots of chocolate prizes to be won. Please come along and support.

Big Bike Ride: We completed our Big Bike Ride last Saturday at Tesco Buckshaw following on from the valiant efforts of our pupils on Red Nose Day. We completed the 832 miles on exercise bikes, which is the equivalent of Land’s End to John O’Groats. Well done to everyone involved, we raised over £400 for Comic Relief. Free Girls Cricket and Rounders Sessions: A further reminder following my last newsletter that, working together with Lancashire Sport and Leyland Cricket Club, the school is to host Cricket and Rounders sessions in our sports hall which will be open to all girls and women aged 10 and over, starting Wednesday 25 March from 6.15-7.45 p.m. The sessions are free of charge. Nurture Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) Sessions rescheduled: We have rescheduled our SRE day for pupils in Years 7-9 to Monday 23 March. This is important in further supporting our pupils’ understanding of Sex and Relationship Education to make better choices in their futures. Parents Evenings: Thank you to all parents for their attendance at our Parents Evening this term. We would like to thank parents especially for completing the Parental survey. Overall the responses were overwhelmingly positive. We will try and contact parents where names were left to discuss any issues raised. I would like to thank you for your continued support of our pupils and school over the course of this term. We finish next Friday 27 March at 1 p.m. and start back on Monday 13 April at 8.55 a.m. Yours sincerely
