5 March 2015 Dear Parents/Carers I am writing to you with some updates and reminders for the Spring term. Firstly, a reminder that it is an INSET day tomorrow and the school is closed except to Year 11 GCSE PE pupils. Inspire and Achieve: New Year 7 - September 2015: We are delighted to have received our numbers for September 2015. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of pupils who wish to be allocated a place at Wellfield and this is a clear sign of the overall impact of our improvements as a school over the last 12 months. We are holding an Open Evening on Tuesday 24 March 5-7 p.m. for parents to come and talk to us about what Wellfield has to offer their children. We will be asking for pupil volunteers to assist on this evening as they are fantastic ambassadors of the school. All prefects are expected to attend on this evening as part of their role. In order for us to prepare for the evening we will be closing the school earlier at 12.30 p.m. on Tuesday 24 March. A lunch service will be available at 12.30 p.m. for pupils. Able Gifted & Talented (AGT) Events: In the last two weeks we have had several groups attending AGT events at Runshaw College in History and Geography. Our pupils have been praised for their conduct and engagement by the college. STEM Week: Pupils have had presentations from our Year 8 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics team raising awareness about a range of activities taking place in the forthcoming weeks. More information to follow. SKY News: We were visited yesterday by the SKY News team who filmed a group of Year 11 pupils in Science, which you may catch on SKY News today. The link is available on our website under “Science” so please take a look. The SKY reporter and cameraman were extremely impressed by our pupils. Even the Year 8 STEM team caught their attention and a number of our pupils were interviewed. Money Mentoring: Our Money Mentors from Year 9 have been out this week in Primary Schools working with pupils on a variety of financial awareness issues. Book of the Year: The next round of the Book of the Year is being held tomorrow at the Harris Library in Preston. Good luck Year 9’s involved. South Ribble High Schools Art Exhibition: We have entered the South Ribble High Schools Art Exhibition again and have more work on display than ever before. As soon as the date is confirmed I will text parents. There is some outstanding work from our pupils and I feel that we maybe in with a strong chance of collecting some “commendations” this year. Challenge Comic Relief: This year for Red Nose Day on Friday 13 March we will be having a “Whacky Sock” day. Pupils will be asked for £1 donation towards Comic Relief and to also bring in a chocolate donation for our Friends of Wellfield Bingo evening on Friday 20 March at Leyland RAF Club at 7.15 p.m. Please help support both worthy charities. Pupils will be expected to wear normal uniform with their “whacky socks”. We will look to have a non-uniform day on the last day of term if we raise enough money on Red Nose Day, Friday 13 March.

Girls Cricket and Rounders Sessions: A reminder following my last newsletter. We are working with Lancashire Sport and Leyland Cricket Club to host Cricket and Rounders sessions in our sports hall, which will be open to all girls and women aged 10 and over starting Wednesday 25 March from 6.15-7.45 p.m. More details to be sent out shortly. The project is also looking for any parents who would like to be involved in a coaching course. Information for both events to be sent out shortly. Nurture Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) Sessions: On Monday 9 March pupils in Year 7 – 9 will be receiving some additional SRE. These are important sessions in further supporting our pupils’ understanding of Sex and Relationship Education to help them to make better choices in their futures. Parents Evenings: Remaining date for Year 7 Parents Evenings is Thursday 19 March 4.30-6.30 p.m. ANGGELS Coffee Morning: On Saturday 10 a.m.-12 p.m. 14 March our ANGGELS (peer mentors) will be holding a Coffee Morning at school in our canteen to raise funds for St Catherine’s Hospice and the Leyland Food Bank. Please come along and support them by enjoying a quick coffee and piece of cake. As ever, thank you for your continued support of our pupils and school. If you have any questions regarding please do not hesitate to contact us. Yours sincerely
