Di masa lalu, sekretaris seringkali disebut sebagai pengetik, mengingat alat yang selalu mereka operasikan. Namun di era informasi dewasa ini, peran sekretaris beralih menjadi jabatan profesional yang tidak lagi dikaitkan dengan peralatan yang mereka gunakan. Seorang sekretaris kini tidak hanya dituntut untuk dapat mengelola waktu dan kegiatan atasan, namun dituntut pula untuk kompeten dalam merencanakan, mengatur, mengelola sumber daya, memprioritaskan masalah, serta mengendalikan waktu dan kegiatannya.

A secretary often called as a typist in the past based on the equipment they used in their work. In the information era nowadays, the role of the secretary becomes a professional who is no longer associated with the equipment used. A secretary nowadays is not only demanded to be able to manage the schedule of her/his superior’s activities, but also to be competent in planning, organizing, managing resources, prioritizing problems and monitoring the time and activities.
