Leaving a Legacy of Faith

LESSON You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. ! (Deuteronomy 6:5-9)!

If you were at worship service Sunday morning, you heard Brian Housman (of parentministry.net) talk about leaving a legacy of faith. Working from this passage in Deuteronomy, Brian outlined three necessary principles. Here’s a brief recap:!

!

Legacy Principle #1: I must be connected to God in order to lead my family. If your relationship with the Lord is healthy, you’ll have biblical wisdom and effectual prayers for your family.!

!

Legacy Principle #2: I must lead my children to discover the heart of God. You are in the position of greatest influence on your children’s lives. Teach them God’s character and God’s promises.!

!

Legacy Principle #3: I must model the ways of God to my children. What you do reveals what you really believe! The most powerful teaching will come through actions that match your words.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Discuss the following in your Life Group generally. Afterwards, pair up and talk about these personally. Speak up even if you do not have kids, as you can have influence on the lives of children in the church too!!

!

1. In what ways have you seen your relationship with God influence your kids (or children around you)? How can you become better connected to God in your own life?

!

2. What are you teaching kids - or those younger in the faith - about God’s character and ways? How can you do this in the ordinary events of your day?!

!

3. What are you modeling about God’s character and promises in your daily actions and responses to life’s situations? What are you doing that does not reflect God’s character and promises?!

There are great parenting resources on our church website at gracepointcoppell.org/parent. When you go home, be sure to visit this site.!

We also love hearing from you. What topics would you like to hear more about? In what areas can the church come alongside you to help as you influence your kids and students? (Hosts: put these in your GPOC attendance record under “Event Notes”.)
