2 clowns (Clown 1 and Clown 2)

Props 1. Large gift-wrapped box containing: a. small creche b. small loaf of French bread c. wooden cross, approx. 12" high d. crown of thorns, approx. 6" diam. e. white cloth napkin f. cut masonry nails, 1 for each participant 2. Gift tag on box saying "FROM GOD" on one side and "TO YOU" on the other 3. On altar: Communion cup filled with grape juice and Communion plate /basket 4. Short piece of string or bright-colored yarn 5. Large Cross pendant or Chrysalis cross pendant 6. Small table or stool 7. Taped music: Recommend Songs for Worship, Vol. 11 by John Michael Talbot, copyright 1985, The Sparrow Corp. Play "Lamb of God" followed by "I am the Resurrection." Skit begins with empty stage or chancel area except for small stool or table in the center. The Gift Box should be hidden nearby out of sight of the audience. No music at this time. Clown 1 enters from the back of audience with string on finger. Clown 1 pantomimes trying to remember why string is on finger (scratch head, periodically eyes look up as if thinking). Clown 2 enters from side or back of the audience wearing cross pendant. Clown 2 approaches Clown 1 and points to string and seems to ask why? Clown 1 mimes "I don't know!" (Shrugs shoulders) Clown 1 ponders for a moment then recognizes with a double-take the cross around the neck of Clown 2, as if to say "Ah-Ha!" Clown 1 holds cross in one hand and indicates to Clown 2 that this is what the string is all about. Clown 1 tells Clown 2 to stay put as Clown 1 shows Clown 2 and the audience the large gift tag labeled "FROM GOD" on one side and "TO YOU" on the other. Clown 2 acknowledges, wondering what is in the box. Clown 1 opens the box. Clown 1 hands the loaf of bread, wrapped in napkin, with two hands to Clown 2. Clown 2 lifts bread with two hands up high as if in thanks to God. Eyes of both clowns should look heavenward. Clown 2 freezes with the bread offered up. Clown 1 takes small creche scene from gift box to show the audience and then places it on the altar or table. Clown 2 unfreezes and lowers bread while holding it as if it were a baby (One hand where head should be and one where rump would be). Clown 2 rocks baby in arms and brings it to shoulder. Clown 1 plays kitchy-koo with baby.

Clown 1 takes wooden cross, crown of thorns, and nail from the gift box showing to Clown 2 and audience and music should begin. (Crown of thorns and wooden cross should be held in one hand and nail in the other. The crown of thorns should be draped over the top of the cross.) Clowns both ponder over meaning of the symbols. Then Clown 1 slowly looks at the baby and the symbols and realizes the connection. Clown 1 nods to Clown 2 that baby must be sacrificed on the cross. Clown 2 draws away while looking at the baby. Clown 1 nods again with more emphasis. Clown 2 slowly and reluctantly places the bread (baby) on the cross held by Clown 1, while slipping the napkin from bread. The bread should be slipped under the crown of thorns. Clown 1 is left holding the bread to the cross with one hand. (Crown of thorns should b e draped over the top of the bread.) Clown 2 clutches cloth napkin to heart with eyes still on cross. Clown 1 slowly and dramatically pushes the nail into the front of the bread. Clown 1 slowly breaks the bread in two by tearing bottom half off with one hand, while still holding the top half to the cross with the other. Clown 1 offers the bottom half to Clown 2 and then the audience. While Clown 1 is offering to audience, Clown 2 slowly takes the Communion plate from the altar and covers with the cloth napkin and brings this back to Clown 2 along with the Communion cup (containing grape juice) and hands it to Clown 1. Clown 1 places both halves of the bread on the plate which Clown 2 is holding then takes the cup of juice. Clown 1 pantomimes pouring the "blood of Christ" from the cross into the cup, even to the last drop. (The cross for this scene should be envisioned as a vessel or container of the blood or wine. The top of the cross would be like the mouth of a bottle. The crown of thorns should continue to be held on the cross with two fingers from behind.) Clown 2 returns plate of bread to the altar, then goes into the audience and returns with the minister. While Clown 2 is getting the minister, Clown 1 turns to the altar and places the crown and the cross on the base on the altar and brings the bread and plate to the minister. Minister and the two Clowns form a line before the altar. The minister offers the bread which partakers break off individually from the loaf. Clown 1 offers the cup of juice into which partakers dip the bread. Clown 2 offers a nail into the palm of each participant and gives the participant a hug. Clowns and minister take Communion, give a nail to the minister and then the clowns retreat.
