Korean Veterans Recognition / Unification Awareness Program The Unification of North and South Korea, an issue currently in the news, is of great importance to Mississippians of Korean descent. We want everyone to realize that Korean-American people are deeply grateful to the American people for liberating the southern portion of the Korean peninsula (now known as South Korea) during the Korean War. Otherwise, we would be living under the repressive government now in place in North Korea. This year is the 61st anniversary of the end of the war, and we are trying to personally thank all surviving American veterans. We, led by our South Korean president through the Korean National Unification Advisory Council, are promoting reunification efforts for the two Koreas. The existing situation splits up families, diminishes the role of Korea in the world, distorts the long history of Korea and leaves a large portion of the Korean people living in poverty and isolation under a tyrannical government. In an effort to help descendants of veterans and other young Americans better understand and appreciate the contribution of their ancestors to the Korean people, we are offering an essay contest. The contest is open to all high school seniors and college undergraduates (any students). The essays should be two to five pages in length and should address the two-Korea issue from whatever perspective the student chooses. Entries should be postmarked or e-mailed no later than June 15. Three winners will be selected, with each winner receiving a $ 500.00 scholarship award, to be presented at a June 21, banquet at JSU Jackson, MS 39217 (601) 212– 3399, Please submit entries to [email protected]. Any questions can also be sent to this e-mail address. Hyun Chong Kim Professor of Art Member, The 16th National Unification Advisory Council, Houston Chapter USA
