In honor of Memorial Day, second grade students created red, white, and blue braided bracelets from chenille stems. Here students are practicing a poem entitled, "The Stars and Stripes."

They did a terrific job proudly reciting the poem during our school's Memorial Day program in the Peace Garden. After the program, we enjoyed a flag "cupcake cake" lovingly made by our Second Grade Chef, Ms. D'Amico!

Students solving math equations with the standard algorithm, tape diagram, number bond, and place value method.

Preschool visited kindergarten for a very fun choice time! We'll see you in kindergarten very soon preschoolers!

4th Grade visited Pre-School!

Preschool was celebrating different kinds of art and having fun with openended art play

We filled our marble jar and celebrated with a pajama day! We watched some Donald Duck cartoons and chowed-down on popcorn. It was a very special and well-deserved day!

Teamwork (and friendship) at its finest!

How many kindergarteners (and 5th graders) can you fit into a cubic meter? You'll have to ask members of Mrs.

The girls in Miss Doiron's class decided to write and perform a play for the boys, Mrs.H, and Mr. V. We all enjoyed their performance of "The Little Red Barn."

Cohens math class to find out!

Bike riding, gymnastics, and cheerleading in kindergarten. Almost everyone made it into our giant pyramid!

In kindergarten, we study the life cycle of living things. As part of our farm unit, we learned about the life cycle of a chicken and hatched our very own chicks! We named our chicks Donny, Tom, Jerry, Junior, and Batman. They are now living with the Higgins family-thank you for taking such good care of them for us!!

Kindergarten was so lucky to have Mrs. Steever! She finished her student teaching with Mrs. Loyzelle's class and to celebrate her time with us, we had an ice cream party. Mrs. Steever, we will miss you!

Miss Doiron's class (and Mrs.H!) threw her a surprise birthday party, complete with cupcakes, flowers, decorations, and party hats!

Mrs. Loyzelle's class set twelve eggs in an incubator on April 25! On May 17 and 18, we had two chicks hatch. We have our fingers crossed that we'll see more hatching very soon!

We have become a class of readers and feel very ready for first grade! Some of the students have been asking to read aloud to the whole class!

So glad spring is finally here!

We have been enjoying being able eat our snacks outside in this beautiful spring weather!

On May 20th, Grade 3 explored the Pond Community at Hildene in Manchester, Vermont. Using nets and magnifiers, students collected pond life and brought them to a classroom area for closer examination. Favorites were water striders, water boatmen, dragonfly nymphs, water scorpions, whirligig beetles, and tadpoles. Grade 3 students have researched a variety of pond animals, which also included beavers, ducks, frogs, salamanders, and microscopic animals, and have written a short report of their animal’s habitat, physical features, food, and life cycle. We have also studied food chains involving pond life.

Mrs. Redman and Mr. Lannon’s fourth graders have completed the best-selling book Wonder, written by R. J. Palcio. In science, the fourth graders completed their magneticlevitator (MAGLEV) science fair. This year there were six working MAGLEVS built. All of the fourth graders spent a considerable amount of time engineering these working models.

The fourth graders have come back from their trip to the Vermont Maritime Museum located on Lake Champlain in Vergennes, Vermont. They studied Vermont as it appeared three million years ago. Three million years ago, the ice at the North Pole began little by little to melt. This made the ground slippery, and ever so slowly, but ever so heavily, the ice began to move south. It took the ice more than two million years to melt altogether, but in those two million years the hills and valleys of Vermont were formed. Huge blocks and sheets of ice - glaciers – pushed all the dirt and rocks one way then another, and did such a thorough job that almost every mountain in Vermont was turned into a hill with a rounded top.

6th graders prepping and presenting their wax museum exhibits!

I'd like to take time in this final newsletter to celebrate all of the hard work the primary team has done in developing our Literacy Block. All of the classroom teachers, special educators and literacy interventionists, as well as Ms. Bornarth, have been working together to make sure that each child has at least one half hour per day of "WIN" time. This "What I Need" time has allowed for more individual attention to each child's strengths and weaknesses in reading and written expression. One of the major components of WIN is the Leveled Literacy Intervention or LLI. This year, we were able to have 18 striving readers participate in LLI in grades K2. Many students completed all of the lessons and ended the program at or even above grade level. Here is a small sample of what the students did:

High quality leveled books are the main component of LLI. Students read a new book each day. Students also take books home to read. Students are encouraged to develop independent reading skills by taking books home from the class library.

Students learn a large number of sight words and practice them regularly.

Magnetic letters are a fun way to practice sight words and phonics.

Individual sounds are learned followed by teaching “chunks” or word families. This helps the student read a large number of words quickly.

Reading strategies are taught and posted in the classroom for students to refer to.

Games are a great way to reinforce everything we’ve learned! Favorite games are: Bananagrams, SpotIt, Pairs in Pears.

"HOW DID IT GET SO LATE SO SOON?" - Dr. Seuss Dear CES Families, The end of the school year is here! I am trying to collect books back at the CES library! Please help your student to look for their library books! Remember to check everywhere! Under your bed, in the pile of papers on the kitchen counter, on your book shelf, in your back pack.. You might be surprised where you find your lost library books! Thank you for your efforts; happy hunting! Mrs. Therriault

May 25th was National Bag Lunch Day! CES celebrated by eating outside in the beautiful weather with a bag lunch prepared by our awesome kitchen staff!

Artists see, touch and create textures. These clay turtles were made by first graders. Interesting items were pressed into the clay to create texture and patterns on the turtle's shell. They were painted with acrylics and a special gold was rubbed on to bring out the special surface. They have a lot of personality!

In Art, 2nd graders formed charming birds in white clay. After the projects were fired in the kiln at Mill River HS, students painted their bird sculptures with acrylic paints. They mixed special colors and added thoughtful details!

Dylan and Makayla of 1st grade have been working with Ms. Bornarth to research, write and illustrate their own handmade books about their favorite animals of the African Savannah. Copies of their work will be made so we can have a set for our school library! Here are some of the watercolor paintings that will illustrate their books. Xander of Kindergarten drew this special drawing of a mother sea turtle and her baby with craypas after reading and writing about turtles.

The winners of the ping-pong drawing for May were

Natalie from Kindergarten! Makayla from 1st Grade! Gracie from 2nd Grade! Jasmine from 3rd Grade! Izzy and Kaylee from 4th Grade! Brooklyn and Emily from 5th Grade! Tyler from 6th Grade!

Bailey Memorial Library is starting two new programs this summer. The first one is for daycare providers in our area. Bags of books on different topics will be delivered to their daycare, along with some activities/ worksheets to go along with the topic of the month. The topics will be random or the provider may let the library know what they are interested in. The second one is for the elderly or shut-ins who find it hard to get to the library. All they have to do is call the library and let them know the type of books they are interested or give the titles of books they would like. The books will be bagged and brought to their house. The daycare provider and the elderly must have a library card which the librarian will help you obtain. They are responsible for the books they receive and the bags must be ready for pickup on the assigned date.

Sign up at the Bailey Memorial Library for the summer reading program. Read 10 books and fill out your chart at the library and when you have read 10 books you will get some great prizes. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
