10 June 2013 Dear Parents/Carers Finally the summer weather has joined us, albeit temporarily, and with the warmer weather students will naturally feel hotter. We do ask that students continue to wear their full uniform to and from school; staff will make allowances for blazers during lessons when the temperature increases. Year 8 Reports: There is a slight delay and these should be with you this week. A text will be sent so you know when to expect them. Academy Update: No further information to report at present. Staff Training: A reminder that we will be closing the school early next Monday, 17 June at 12.30 p.m., for staff training. This will be the last one of the school year and I would like to thank parents for their support since September in enabling me to provide these extra opportunities for our staff to train together. Students who are unable to get home on this day will be able to stay in school and be supervised in our ICT suite, to catch up with Home Based Learning, until 3.25 p.m. Students can leave at 12.30 p.m. but our canteen service will be available for all students between 12.30 and 1 p.m. Parents may remember from my newsletter at the end of March that I said that I would propose the possibility of the school closing an hour earlier on Tuesdays from September. I have decided that we are not going to proceed with this for the next year but may review it in the future. I will however, look to close the school slightly earlier on some afternoons throughout the year – once every half-term. This will allow us to increase our training opportunities for our staff in the same way we have this year with a further increase in the quality of teaching at school. We were due to have a full day closure for staff training in November; this will be cancelled to offset these early closures throughout the year. New Reading Programme: We have just purchased a new reading programme to promote reading and literacy in the school. The Accelerated Reading Programme will allow us to track students’ reading abilities and help support their reading and literacy in Year 7. This programme will be rolled out in September to the new Year 7 students and also to Year 8. I can also tell you that the school’s PTA, the Friends of Wellfield have donated £2,000 towards the cost of new books for the programme. Time will be built into some tutorial in the morning to provide opportunities for students to read and work through the programme. I hope that you can support us with the new programme by providing similar opportunities at home to develop an interest in reading as part of home-based learning. Clothes Drop: If any parents are in the process of a late spring clean and have any clothes, curtains, pairs of shoes that they are planning to dispose of, please can I draw your attention to the clothes container located in the main school car park. We receive a donation towards school funds from this and we are very grateful for any donations. If you have a particularly large load please contact the school in advance and we can try and make sure the donation is stored if it is too big for the collection container, or it is full. Cont’d …/
