Reading Book Discussion from the Vermont Humanities Council book discussions, Border Crossings. The discussion series includes a book of short stories, a memoir, and two novels to bring us to present day consideration of migration, immigration, and refuge. June 18 - Crossers by Philip Caputo is a novel about 3 generations of ranchers on the Mexican/ Arizona border. Moving between eras and countries, it illuminates the transborder conflict: Migrants fleeing poverty and terror at great peril and the resultant cost and fear for homeowners. July 9 - Exit West by Mohsen Hamid The Pakistini author has created a compelling, inventive novel that follows two young lovers as they leave a country in civil war. They struggle to not just survive, but to retain their love and a sense of their past as they walk through fantastical doors to new lands. July 30 - Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen – Collection of short stories about the hardships and dreams of migrants caught between two worlds, that of their Vietnamese homeland and adopted country. Pulitzer-prize winning author‘s family in 1975 became refugees and writes of characters haunted by ghosts. Suzanne Brown is the discussion leader. Multiple copies of the book are available to borrow at the library. Free and open to the public! Contact Cindy at [email protected] or at 626-5475 for more information.
