FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE HAD AN AUCTION The program for the April meeting of Friendship Circle was a fun auction. Items donated by members were then auctioned back to the members and a few guests. Kathy Caval, our experienced and capable auctioneer, was assisted by Natalie Hill and Diane Chipperfield. Kathy did an outstanding job convincing her audience that she was offering items they “can‟t live without.”

All women are invited to join us. We meet monthly, except for January and August. As we fellowship with each other, we become better acquainted with our church sisters. We even have a Secret Sister program. Throughout the year we offer our services where we are needed, raise money for missions as well as our church home. Don‟t wait for an invitation, just check the calendar for the next meeting and come. Meetings are usually the third Monday of the month. You will be very welcome.

Pastor’s Tom’s Corner

Our national Memorial Day holiday is still a couple of weeks away but will probably be past by the time you read these words. The Sunday after Easter was celebrated at Central Baptist as a “Memorial Sunday”, a new and welcome tradition to this pastor. I have chosen to share with you the following excerpts from my personal reading as they shed a thoughtful perspective on the memory theme. “Ours is a historical faith based on events that actually happened in human beings in our space and time, not on abstract contortions of the mind. It is authoritative, not in power or external legitimacy but because it is given by personal trustworthiness. The root meaning of authority (Latin augere, “to make grow”) is existential, implying that truth is passed on from one generation to another as a living, personal communication, not just a set of ideas. As Christianity expanded with the testimony of those who had known the risen Christ, believers would gather at the graves of martyrs, who as traditores had faithfully passed their faith on to the living. Celebrating the Eucharist together, dead and living were united in the faith. As Robert Wilken states, „The faithful departed were not simply remembered, they were welcomed as participants in the liturgy… All the members of the church, past, present and future, were fused into one single community.” … “When all memory has gone, all sense of identity goes also. An individual with no memory is adrift in a present tethered to no past. In our cultural and religious state of amnesia, we have lost all connection to the religious art of the past, the role of the cathedral in the city center, the thousands of biblical references in Dante and Shakespeare, even the dates of the church calendar. But when the Scriptures became critical signposts on our journey, a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path, then the memory found therein suggests that we can still dwell in community with each other and those who have gone before.” … “Likewise we become both the observed and the observer when we delve into memory. In turn we gain sensitivity to others, learning how to encourage and nurture them as we share from our own memories –for community is built of shared memories. As Augustine notes, „The more by the bond of love we enter into each other‟s mind, the more even old things become new for us again.‟ Memory is our path to each other, as indeed salvific memory alone is our path to God. It is the memory of the exodus, and indeed of the cross, the resurrection and ascension of Christ – indeed, of Pentecost. How glorious, then is our charge and privilege to transfer this magnificent faith!” From Joyful Exiles – Life in Christ on the Dangerous Edge of Things by James M. Houston. These paragraphs were selected from Chapter Six, “Christian Transmission in an Age of Disjunction.” Blessed memories, Pastor Tom

God's Purpose for Me

At our May meeting we finished our year-end business. This included extending our heartfelt thanks to Sylvia Pierce, our out-going board member. Sylvia is leaving us as her term has expired. She has been in charge (among other duties) of taking care of our special A B C Offerings. Sylvia has faithfully make sure the envelopes were placed in the bulletins and explained to all of us what each offering covers. She has also been „back up‟ chairperson this past year. She has always been willing to help plan and cook the WARM or Habitat for Humanity meals as needed. Sylvia has been willing to quickly step up and help...whether the need be cooking, delivering White Gifts or offering good advice at our meetings. She has seldom missed a meeting (She has already offered to help out in the kitchen if we need her.) Lastly, but most importantly, Sylvia has been ending our Mission Board Meetings with beautiful prayers each month. We will all miss Sylvia as she takes a well-deserved „rest‟ this year. I am truly grateful for Sylvia and all of our Mission Board members who work so well together. In Christian Love, Kay Perrone, Chairperson

Sometimes I get to thinking As my labors I review That I should like a higher place with greater tasks to do. But I come to the conclusion When the envying is stilled That the post to which God sent Is the post He wanted filled. So I plod along with patience In the hope when day is through That I am really necessary to the things God wants to do. And there isn't any service I can give that I should scorn For it may be just the reason God allowed me to be born. Author Unknown.

This is the month the boards of our church are seeking new members. Please keep the church in prayers as we all consider where God would have us serve. For the Board of Deacons

CANONICUS Camp and Conferencing Center Why should a Christian camp be the choice of Christian people? It has been said that a week of Christian camping is equivalent to an entire year of Sunday School. This may be hard to believe at first until you consider that so much of Christian faith is taught by example, through compassion and friendship, in the context of relationship. Camp is designed to create relationships in which faith is expressed and shared. How many people have the opportunity to join in worship and singing every day of the week? A Christian camp is a place with an intentional focus on experiencing the presence of God and deepening each camper’s relationship Christian camping in an outdoor setting takes the experience of the natural world a step further. For campers it makes the connection between the creation and the Creator – a Creator who not only made the world, but also made each person and calls each one to a life of faithfulness and service honoring Christ. An experience of living in Christian community – camp is designed for the formation of community. Within Christian community faith is shared, challenges are faced, forgiveness is required and is offered.

Great Doctrines of the Bible This study will explore the formation of church doctrine and its importance in understanding and living out the Christian faith. Among those doctrines to be considered are God: His Character & Attributes; Humanity: Dignity & Depravity; Christ: The God-Man; Salvation: Righteousness through Faith; and The Church: Mission & Message.

Vacation Bible School JUNE 28 - JULY 2 All Hands on Deck!!!

A High Seas Expedition sets sail this June 28th where we’ll explore the mighty love of God! We’ll experience amazing Bible adventures as well as watch for God in our everyday lives, God Sightings, we call them! We’ll all discover that God is active in our lives and that His fingerprints are everywhere! The VBS program is based around 5 stories from Acts: God frees Peter from prison, God comforts Paul in a storm at sea, Paul survives a poisonous snake bite, Peter and John teach about Jesus and the community of believers share. Be prepared for the sanctuary to be transformed into an ocean-going vessel fully equipped with a mast and helm. Opening and closing will be held here, where kids learn the Bible points, stories and verses as well as new songs every day. Then they move to 5 other stations where the Bible story is continually reinforced: Ship Rec Games, Bible Voyage, Goodies from the Galley, Sail Away Cinema and Clipper Ship Crafts and Missions. If you are interested in volunteering or helping out in ANY way, please contact Beth Smallridge at 860-599-5703 or Marie Bertsch at 401-322-6036. Please check your weekly bulletins for more information about food, craft and decorating items that we will need. We’ll also be doing the Sponsor-a-Child for $15. Since we still don’t charge for kids to come to VBS, we ask our congregation to help out. Each child gets a t-shirt, CD of music, daily craft and snack. Although the CD’s are donated, we feel the other items are an important remembrance of each year’s VBS. Even if you can’t participate in this year’s VBS, please plan to attend the picnic on July 1st at 5:30pm. You’ll enjoy a fantastic meal as well as get to see the kids sing and dance. There will also be a slide show of pictures from throughout the week. We look forward to a swashbuckling adventure through God’s Word and are excited to discover that God shows his powerful love throughout Scripture! Please pray for the children as well as volunteers as we embark on yet another year of outreach ministry to our community.

Nautical items are needed - 3 brass bells, wooden barrels, lanterns, thick rope (lots), large life preservers, netting (could be soccer netting), spy glasses, 2 new cotton mops, mop buckets, LOTS of brown butcher paper or brown packing paper (large and tall rolls), and two blue tarps If you have any of these items, call the church office and let us know! 401 596-4929

Pastoral Search Committee Report June 2010 The committee completed our church profile in early May. We have also received several batches of profiles of pastors who might be interested in making a change to a new church. The last batch came just a few days ago. We have received a total of 46 profiles, so far. They cover a wide range of people. Some have no actual experience as a full pastor, but they range all the way to some with over 30 years of experience. We have begun the process of exchanging information with two and will probably be contacting more, possibly by the time you read this. The profiles that we receive have a lot of information on them. It takes a lot of time to go over them all thoroughly enough to decide whether to contact that person. There is, of course, lots of information they don’t cover. Oddly enough, there is very little information about the pastor’s past positions, like you would find on a standard resume. The two that we have exchanged information with, so far, did not have resumes written. We have asked them to do so. This lack of a resume is apparently pretty common among pastors. Working pastors are very busy, too. So, it is hard for them to find time to respond to requests like this, quickly. With each batch of profiles we have received, we just pray that, if that one pastor the Lord has in mind for us is among those names, the Lord will open our hearts to recognize that person. We also ask for your prayers for that, too. We are always very thankful for your support, patience and prayers. Ron Rodehorst, Search Committee Chairman

THE GREAT FLOOD OF MARCH 30, 2010

FLOODING It started out to be a cloudy day And the rain began to fall The wind began to whistle And rivers raged so tall The bridges under water No power at all around Houses floating everywhere The trees uprooted and down So many people in need of help The Red Cross helpful and kind To offer shelter from the storm With supplies and peace of mind Today the sun is shining bright A sign of better days And hope for resolution Going forward in many ways.

Congregation Prayer for Guidance Almighty God, we, your family at Central Baptist, come to you with grateful hearts, for you have given us so much. Help us to be faithful servants who look to the future with hope and expectation. Our special prayer is that you will guide us as we search for a new pastor. Please, bless those we have charged with that work and send your Holy Spirit to attend them and grant them wisdom and patience. Oh Lord, would you prepare that pastor for us. Bring us a pastor who will love us and lead us in following Jesus. It is in the Master‟s name we pray. Amen

In The Spotlight By Nancy Balentine

Rita Saunders was in the best possible place during the '38 hurricane - in the safety of the newborn area of the Westerly Rita and Walter Harvey Hospital. Walter, already two at the time, had to take his chances at home in Wood River Junction with his parents and his eight older brothers and sisters. Walter and Rita met during their high school years (Rita at South Kingstown High and Walter at Westerly High) and became engaged during Rita's senior year. Walter joined the Navy after his graduation serving in Newport on the US Wilkinson DL5 for two years and then on the same ship when it was homeported in San Diego. Their first child, Anita, was born at the San Diego Naval Hospital. Three more children, Pam, Scott, and Greg, were born to Rita and Walter after their return to civilian life in Rhode Island. Their three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren all live in the Monroe, Washington, area near Vancouver. After Walter's Navy service during which he made port in Scotland and Denmark, he began work at Electric Boat in 1957. He began as a pipe fitter followed by enrollment in the draftsman apprentice school which led to a supervisory position in the design department. Specifically, he helped write the manuals on operations and repair of the subs for the Navy's use at sea. His retirement came 43 years later. Rita kept everything at home humming all this time. Rita's interests vary from baking to videotaping movies without commercials, and she is learning to transfer them to DVD form. She has knit enough sweaters for World Vision to give herself a painful shoulder. She favors family stories for her personal reading as well as for her library of movies. Walter says his interests are two: Habitat and golf. He has had unusual opportunities to participate in pro golf tournaments as a "walking scorer". He called in the score from each hole to a central scoreboard. He got to watch Tiger Woods as a college player. He worked at Pleasant Valley and the Newport Country Club and especially enjoyed the Seniors' tournaments. Habitat has provided a meaningful avenue of service for Walter. He has used his carpentry skills in the building or rehabilitation of about twenty homes in South County. Rita has had a role in providing lunches to Habitat workers through the Central Baptist missions board. Both Rita and Walter like to travel. They have visited their daughter Anita and her family in Washington State many times. Annually they use a time share in Orlando, Florida, and have had a recent trip to Yellowstone in Wyoming. Their children gave them the wonderful treat of a Hawaiian cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary. It must have been an exciting Sunday for Rita and Walter in April of 1956 when both were baptized together by Rev. John Elliot. Their marriage came two months later, and they have been in service to Central Baptist ever since. Between them they have served on every board and most committees. The elevator committee was a very satisfying project for Walter as well as years of service as usher and head usher. He has worked with the men who repair and refurbish the church and chapel keeping both in fine condition. Rita has served as assistant financial secretary and as an officer of one of the women's circles. Since the inception of the Needleworkers, she has headed the knitting program for World Vision sending 30 sweaters to the Knit for Kids program. She works at every collation, finding that effort very rewarding. Rita commented that she and Walter live "quiet" lives. My observation of them translates "quiet" to "peaceful". And peace is a fruit of the Spirit that they have received and enjoy to the benefit of many.

Spirited Rides Well here it is the beginning of another riding season and can you believe it is our third year? We have been meeting later in the evening throughout the Winter months and then going somewhere for dinner. It has been an unexpected pleasure to continue through the non-riding season. Our relationship with each other gains strength through our common love for God. We started looking into how we can affect our community a little bit more and have been making our services available for anyone who needs a little help getting something done. Evelyn LeBlanc recently needed a piece of heavy furniture moved and we were all too happy to assist. It isn’t much, but it is part of being a community. If you need help with something let the members of Spirited Rides know and we will assist where we can. Remember when you are driving around this summer that the people on motorcycles are not just individuals with loud pipes or riders who want to ride reckless. We are fathers, sons, daughters, wives, husbands, loving kind individuals who love to ride motorcycles and who love God. While there is more inherent risk in riding, it is a very manageable task, which can be done safely. If you know someone interested in meeting with us we usually meet on Tuesdays at 4:45 p.m. during the riding season and 5:45 p.m. during the off season. Just contact David Smallridge at home (860) 599-5703 or work (860) 433-7016, to find out what is happening on that Tuesday. God Bless and Ride Well In Christ, David Smallridge

CENTRAL NURSERY SCHOOL We are excited to report that as of May 2010, Central Nursery School has completed its 40th year! We owe our success to our past teachers, parents, and students that began such great traditions and set such high standards. We continue to follow these educational standards, a welcoming and safe environment for our students. The faculty looks forward to the next school year. We have a new team that, I believe, compliments each other with its various skills and positive outlook to providing the very best for our upcoming class. Our Monday, Wednesday, and Friday class will be extended to an all day program to accommodate our dedicated families. Registration is still open and we ask that each of you let your family and friends know about our great program that meets the state educational standards and maintains a warm, family atmosphere. The teaching staff would like to extend a very special thank you to Paul and Walter for keeping our school beautiful and to Laurie for all her assistance whenever it is requested! In addition, a special thanks to the Central Baptist Community for their continued support. Sincerely, Laura Beverly Joan Pagliuso Lauren Sposato Rebecca Turano

Dear Central Baptist Members, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support this past year. I can‟t believe another year is coming to a close. While preparing to end our 2009-2010 school year, I would like to take the opportunity to thank each of you on behalf of all the teachers for our continuous support we have received from the council. We have been able to come and present our needs before the board and they have addressed. This type of support has helped our success on a professional and personal level. We look forward to working with the board again with the upcoming school year. Sincerely, Laura Beverly & Staff

We have openings in our Monday, Wednesday, and Friday class next year. This is for five year olds. We also have openings in our Tuesday, Thursday program. This is for three year olds. Both classes run from 9 11:30. Our enrollment is up from last year, which is a good sign!

SMILES AND SO FORTH Humor, Wisdom, Poetry, Quizzes, and So Forth

10 Little Christians 10 little Christians standing in line. 1 disliked the preacher, then there were 9. 9 little Christians stayed up very late. 1 overslept Sunday, then there were 8. 8 little Christians on their way to Heaven. 1 took the low road and then there were 7. 7 little Christians chirping like chicks. 1 disliked music, then there were 6. 6 little Christians seemed very much alive, but one lost his interest then there was 5. 5 little Christians pulling for Heaven's Shore, but one stopped to rest, then there were 4 4 little Christians each busy as a bee. 1 got his feelings hurt, then there were 3 3 little Christians knew not what to do. 1 joined the sporty crowd, then there were 2 2 little Christians, our rhyme is nearly done, differed with each other, then there was 1 1 little Christian can't do much 'tis true, brought his friend to bible study, then there were 2 2 earnest Christians, each won one more. That doubled the number, then there were 4 4 sincere Christians worked early and late. Each won another then there were 8 8 splendid Christians if they doubled as before. In just so many Sundays, we'd have 1,024 In this little jingle, there is a lesson true, you belong either to the building or to the wrecking crew!

WALK A LITTLE SLOWER, DADDY

Walk a little slower, Daddy, Said a little child so small. I'm following in your footsteps And I don't want to fall. Sometimes your steps are very fast, Sometimes they are hard to see; So, walk a little slower, Daddy, For you are leading me. Someday when I'm all grown up, You're what I want to be; Then I will have a little child Who'll want to follow me. And I would want to lead just right, And know that I was true; So walk a little slower, Daddy, For I must follow you.

Remember Dad On Father’s Day June 13

Committees Oh, give me a pity. I'm on a committee. Which means that from morning to night, We attend and amend and contend and defend Without a conclusion in sight. We confer and concur, we defer and demur And reiterate all of our thoughts. We revise the agenda with frequent addenda And consider a load of reports. We compose and propose, we supposed and oppose And the points of procedure are fun! But though various notions are brought up as motions There's terribly little gets done. We resolve and absolve, but never dissolve Since it's out of the question for us. What a shattering pity to end our committee. Where else could we make such a fuss?

JUDY GRADY MOVED TO NEVADA

WHAT A FRIEND!

On May 7, Judy moved to Nevada to live with her son Brian. During her years at CBC, she had been a member of the choir, a member of Friendship Circle, and always a cheerful willing volunteer to help in any way. We will miss Judy and we wish her well in her new home.

What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer!
