DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs passenger and vehicle counts and time checks; computes and summarizes findings. REPORTS TO Transportation Planning Manager (Traffic and Schedules), or designee. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS may include by are not limited to the following: •
Performs ride checks on board transit revenue vehicles; records estimated times of arrival and departure at scheduled stops, passenger counts, and bus stop pass-bys. Enters data into Personal Data Assistant (PDA)

Tabulates the number of passengers boarding and alighting buses at scheduled stops, observes exit doors, standing riders, and “false counts.”
•
Accesses fare-box at the beginning and end of ride checks to retrieve fare information; establishes revenue points and confirms the match between end fare revenue amounts and observed ridership counts.
•
Estimates and records approximate bus speed by observing vehicle movement through traffic, and reports data to Scheduling Unit for scheduling modifications.
•
Performs Point Checks, and checks on-time performance by counting and recording bus arrival and departure times at pre-specified time points.
•
Reports delays due to weather, traffic, road conditions, wheelchair boardings, and other occurrences; and logs explanations for schedule setbacks.
•
Reports equipment failures, such as malfunctioning headsigns, wheelchair lifts, fare boxes, and transfer machines; to indicate sources of schedule delay, and to inform the Transportation department.

Distributes District surveys to transit users; and interviews passengers regarding origin and destination points to provide data for proposed routes or schedule revision.
•
Summarizes data and notes for reports, and enters data into personal computers.
•
May enter passenger complaints, commendations, and suggestions into PDA device during ride checks.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge Of: General office practices and procedures; basic math, and data gathering methods; and the various bus models and designs in use by the District, and seating capacity. Ability To: Collect a variety of transit planning and performance data; accurately perform data entry functions; follow oral and written instructions and work with minimal supervision; work accurately with figures, make arithmetical calculations and use a calculator; prepare summaries and reports; read bus route schedules and time tables; quickly learn and use personal digital assistant (PDA) as well as personal computers and commonly used software for word processing and spreadsheets at a beginning level of proficiency after initial training; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain positive working relationships with those encountered in the course of work using principles of good customer service Education: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade. Experience: One (1) year of clerical or general office experience; or one year of work experience which involved meeting or dealing with the public on a daily basis. License/Certification: Possession of, the ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Class C Driver License and meet the District’s driving standards. Physical Requirements: Must maintain the physical condition necessary to perform tasks in an outdoor setting under all seasonal weather conditions including rain, wind, cold and hot temperatures; sit and/or stand inside the confines of a transit vehicle for up to three (3) hours at a time; walk short to medium distances intermittently during the work-shift; stand or sit outdoors adjacent to the street and traffic for up to two (2) hours at a time; climb bus steps; bend the neck and rotate head from side to side; twist the upper trunk frequently to the right and left to view passengers and oncoming buses; comfortably hold light objects (1 lb or under) continuously, including a PDA, and/or clipboard; grasp and hold a stylus and use fingers to accurately manipulate all PDA functions comfortably while sitting or standing; occasionally hold and carry a box of up to ten (10) pounds of materials such as passenger surveys; see and hear adequately to count and interact with Bus Operators, passengers, and other members of the public; and safely drive a District automobile.
