POLITICAL WAR The Election Commission of India has announced the polling dates for Uttar Pradesh. The state will go to elections in seven phases. The polling dates are February 11, February 15, February 19, February 23, February 27, March 4 and March 8, 2017. Counting of votes will take place on March 11, 2017. Samajwadi Party (SP), the current ruling government came into power in 2012 by securing a majority of 224 seats. The Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha consists of 403 assembly seats. The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are the two main political contenders in Uttar Pradesh. Besides, national political parties BJP and Congress also have important recompenses in this politically significant state.

pathy to get votes, etc. Well the very first reason may be Mulayam Singh Yadav needed Amar Singh back in the party while Akhilesh Yadav is against this and it has been very clear for a long time that Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son haven't been getting along. As Akhilesh Yadav has been trying to become his own man since May 2014 but with all due respect to-

As the largest state in India in terms of population, UP returns the largest number of seats to the Lok Sabha. Besides that, the 2017 UP Assembly elections will be an important test for the BJP on its recent demonetization policy in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections as well. But the question arises that what is the cause of friction between father and son?

wards his father Mulayam Singh Yadav. But all were shocked when suddenly SP supreme Mulayam Singh Yadav eliminates his own son i.e., CM of Uttar Pradesh form his own party. Most of the party leaders and other bodies were protesting against this step. They want him to take this decision back. Many believed that the main reason behind this is Shivpal Yadav as Shivpal as state party president expelled seven Akhilesh -loyalists from the party, Signaling a confrontation that has serious repercussions for the authority and image of the chief minister.

How could differences over a few seats be so challenging that the father had to sack his chief minister son from his own party for 6 years? Likewise, many allegations were made by the other political expertise over this issue such as just a political stunt, drama, sym-

was able to show all his opponents that how powerful he is. As it was clear that majority was with Akhilesh and after watching this scenario Mulayam Singh met with the Election Commission to stake claim to "cycle" but Akhilesh Yadav camp claims support of over 200 of 229 SP lawmakers while there was a fear that Election Commission may freeze cycle symbol if not convinced by claims. In the end the symbol was given to Akhilesh’s side. He was also called back into the party within 24 hours. Mulayam Singh Yadav later clarifies he has no dispute with his son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, and that they will "sort out problems." There are a number of issues that the state is facing today among which the law and order situation is most critical. However, matters of caste and religion tend to take away the spotlight from core issues in the run-up to every assembly election in this state. Uttar Pradesh has a very high incidence of poverty with more than 29.4 % of its population living below poverty line. The quality of basic infrastructure such as education, power supply, roadways is deplorable and corruption is the prime reason for such sad state of affairs. Well we can only hope and make sure that everyone should cast their vote and think beyond cast, religion, etc. for the betterment of the state and nation as well.

Title: Defeat Is an Orphan Author: Myra Macdonald Publisher: Penguin Books Limited Format: Hardback Price: ₹599 Overview: "When India and Pakistan held nuclear tests in 1998, they restarted the clock on an intense competition that had begun with Partition. Nuclear weapons restored strategic parity, erasing the advantage of India’s much larger military. But the shield offered by nuclear weapons also encouraged a reckless reliance by Pakistan on militant proxies even as jihadis spun out of control within and beyond its borders. In the years that followed, Pakistan would lose decisively to India, sacrificing its own domestic stability in a failed attempt to assert its claim to Kashmir and influence events in Afghanistan. Defeat is an Orphan tracks the defining episodes in the relationship between India and Pakistan from 1998, from bitter conflict in the mountains to military confrontation in the plains, from the hijacking of an Indian airliner to the Mumbai attacks." It is a must read for the lovers of history and facts.

Film: Raees Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Mahira Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Farhan Akhtar, Sunny Leone, Zeenat Aman, Mumtaz Sorcar Director: Rahul Dholakia Released On: 25/1/17 Genre: Crime/Action

Republic Day isn't even a big festive weekend like Eid, Diwali, Christmas, which has scope for two big films to release and hence the clash of titans is rather uncalled for. Raees marks the return of Shah Rukh Khan in the negative space 6 years after Don 2 and the same has grabbed enough eye balls. The biggest crowd puller of Raees is undoubtedly Shah Rukh Khan, who is one of India's biggest superstars today. Despite the constant delay in its release, the teaser that released in 2015, kept the interest around Raees alive for long. The theatrical trailer just added onto the buzz. There have been reports about constant re-shoots to 'commercialize' the film and there is always a fear when film-makers move away from the script for commercial reasons. On face of it, Raees appears as an out and out messy entertainer. The budget of the film has shot up considerably owing to the re-shoots and a mere 100-110 crore would not be enough for the film emerge a hit. The buzz that Raees is inspired by a true story, adds to the curiosity value of the film. Raees as a vehicle is riding on Shah Rukh Khan's shoulders that would ensure a huge opening weekend, following which the content will have to support King Khan's stardom.

PLACE TO VISIT KERELA BACKWATERS

Sophiya Qamar

This Valentine month which should not meant for Mitians, there is nothing better to visit “The Kerala backwaters” are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast (known as the Malabar Coast) of Kerala state in southern India. The network includes five large lakes linked by canals, both man-made and natural, fed by 38 rivers, and extending virtually half the length of Kerala state. The backwaters were formed by the action of waves and shore currents creating low barrier islands across the mouths of the many rivers flowing down from the Western Ghats range.

alongside the backwaters, providing a green hue to the surrounding landscape. Kerala was ranked as one of the "50 destinations of a lifetime" by National Geographic Traveler in a special collectors' issue released just before the turn of the millennium, with houseboat and backwater resort tourism in Alappuzha seen as leading factors.

Vembanad is the largest of the lakes. The backwaters have a unique ecosystem: freshwater from the rivers meets the seawater from the Arabian Sea. A barrage has been built near Thanneermukkom, so salt water from the sea is prevented from entering the deep inside, keeping the fresh water intact. Such fresh water is extensively used for irrigation purposes. Tourists can luckily see unique species of aquatic life including crabs, frogs and mudskippers, water birds such as terns, kingfishers, darters and cormorants, and animals such as otters and turtles live in and alongside the backwaters. Palm trees, Pandanus shrubs, various leafy plants and bushes grow

The Kerala government has classified the tourist houseboats as ‘platinum, gold and silver’. Regular ferry services connect most locations on both banks of the backwaters. The Kerala State Water Transport Department operates ferries for passengers as well as tourists. It is the cheapest mode of transport through the backwaters.

The kettuvallams (Kerala houseboats) in the backwaters are one of the prominent tourist attractions in Kerala. More than 2000 kettuvallams ply the backwaters.

Ashtamudi lake, which was a sleepy destination for years, has been transformed into a busy tourist destination with plush resorts around the Lake and the backwaters. So Mitians bookmark this place and visit this wonderful heavenly place.
