From Dr Tasker: Principal

From the Principal Dear Parents, Students and Friends of GIS, Although the year is still a new one, there has, as always, been a lot happening at GIS. For the examination classes – Year 11 and IB2 – Mock Examinations have already been and gone. These examinations are very important for the students as it enables them to identify areas where they need to focus leading up to the IGCSE and IB examinations in May and June. Friends of Garden PTA continues to gain in relevance and popularity. A big thank you to those parents willing and able to attend the meetings, or help out with requests. Mr Shiells gave a presentation about our Music provision at the last meeting – this included news about fantastic developments with instrumental tuition and the construction of practice rooms in the near future. There was also the very exciting announcement that we will be hosting the 2013 FOBISSEA Music Festival in November. More immediate however is the FOBISSEA Drama Festival we are hosting from February 6 to 9. The hard work in organising such a big event is beginning to be realized; the festival looks like it will both be a lot of fun and very worthwhile for the students involved. The new uniform jumpers arrived last week, but on inspection we were not satisfied with the quality, so they have been returned. We do expect to be able to announce their availability soon however. Last weekend we had 22 staff members trained, or re-trained, in Emergency First Response. It is very important that we remain up-to-date with such things to ensure that the students of GIS receive the correct care and attention should the need arise. Good luck to Mr Lynch and the Senior Boys basketball team as they travel to the Chiang Mai Invitational Basketball tournament on Thursday February 7. Kind Regards,

Dr Stuart Tasker PhD (Ed), PGDipEd (Math Ed), PGCertEd (Ed Admin), PGDipTchg, BSc Principal Garden International School

Have Your Say on the PTA! The Friends of Garden PTA has been looking at ways in which the wider community of parents and friends can support the children in their learning. One way is to see what skills, interest, abilities and, most importantly, availability we have within our GIS community. As such we are looking to create a database of this information to help the teachers. To help us achieve this, please go to the following link and complete the survey form. http://tinyurl.com/FOGPTA

Movember Money The staff who grew all sorts of facial hair for Movember raised almost 10,000 baht. We have donated 5,000 baht to the Siriraj Foundation, a local charity that supports sufferers of cancer who cannot afford proper care and treatment. The remaining money is being used as seeding funds our Eco Warriors group.

From Mr Grisdale: Head of Primary and Foundation

Happy New Year. I hope that your holiday was a relaxing one and that you are ready for a fun-packed Term 2. Major highlights of this term include Sports Days in February and the Key Stage 2 production in April. Welcome to new children and staff This term we welcome two new Teaching Assistants to Primary – Khun Oil and Ms Abi. Khun Oil is in Nursery and Ms Abi is in Early Years. We hope they are happy here and we look forward to working with them. This term has also seen a large number of new children joining the school: In Early Years we say hello to Thomas and Chome In Nursery we say hello to Ambroise, Ji Hoon, Se-A, and Eunji In Reception we say hello to Nicky In Year One we say hello to Calliope In Year Two we say hello to Janine, Moji and Hannah In Year Four we say hello to Grace, Octavia, Arin and Isaac In Year Five we say hello to Adenor and Yuji In Year Six we say hello to Joshua and Sasha. We hope that your time at Garden is a very happy and productive one.

School Trips January has been an incredibly busy one for the children. As well as the usual hustle and bustle of school life we have had a number of events, opportunities and trips - some of which are described below…

Sculptures on the beach! Year 1 took a class trip to Namrin Beach on Wednesday 16th January, to collect natural materials to make sculptures in the style of Andy Goldsworthy. They did a great job; here are some of their masterpieces that they created.

Magnificent Mangroves By Aastha (Year 4EH) This year in Year 4 we are learning about ‘Taking Care Of The Environment’. To learn more about this we went to the beach and saw the mangroves. Here we are planting the seeds of the mangroves. Mangroves are important for our lives because they keep us safe from hurricanes, storms and floods. They also make a good habitat for sea creatures. The mangroves’ roots are the most important thing as it helps it stand so it can push the water away. Did you know that mangroves are the only tree which can live in salty water! Mangroves have many kinds of trees - some are good for health, some can help us make houses. We planted some mangrove seeds during our visit and then went to the beach to do a beach clean. We saw so many ropes and a lot of plastic. I went in the sea and saw a rock. I turned it over and it looked like it had crystals on, it was amazing! I learnt two main things from this trip - never cut down mangrove trees because they protect us and do not litter the beach because fish die and we will not get fish to eat!

We’re going to the zoo Last week Nursery students went to the zoo as this relates to their current topic of ‘Wild Animals’. We look forward to their report next month.

The Grunch The Key Stage 2 production of ‘The Grunch’ has allocated parts and begun rehearsals. Make sure that your evening on April 4 is free so you can watch this fantastic show. More details each month….

Football On January 21 we took six teams of children to a match at St Andrew’s. The children were coached by Ms Ellie, Mr Joe and Ms Lucy. All the children tried their very best and had a great time. We sent a total of 41 children, all of whom played part of a match. These were the results: Year 4 Boys Vs St Andrew’s - lost 2-6 with Nicky scoring both goals. Most Valuable Player – Nicky. Year 5 Boys Vs St Andrew’s - lost 1-9 with Direk scoring the goal. Most Valuable Player – Kenjung. Year 6 Boys Vs St Andrew’s - lost 3-8 with Nutt scoring a hat-trick. Most Valuable Player – Nutt. Year 4 Girls Vs St Andrew’s - lost 1-2 with Mansha scoring the goal. Most Valuable Player – Ella. Year 5 Girls Vs St Andrew’s - won 4-1 with Galatee scoring a hat-trick and Rida scoring a goal. Most Valuable Player – Galatee. Year 6 Girls Vs St Andrew’s - lost 0-6. Most Valuable Player – Ms Brenda.

Seedlings Every Tuesday and Thursday from 2.20pm until 3.10pm there is a play group for children under the age of two which meets in the Early years Room (the yellow room). This club is called Seedlings and it is run by Ms Brenda (Year 6) on Tuesdays and Ms Tara (EY teacher) on Thursdays. It costs 100 baht per session per child and parents and carers are expected to stay. More details from Khun Bonnie in the Front Office, Ms Brenda [email protected] or Ms Tara [email protected].

This term we have a number of very important House Events coming up, most notably the sports days in February, the House Drama in February and the House Art in March. Juicy News + clubs Clubs have started again in earnest and one club is producing a newspaper – the aim is to get at least one copy out this term - so keep your eyes peeled for ‘Juicy News’ Cluster days The next cluster day will be organized by ISE on February 28. Its title is ‘Challenges of the Mind’ and its purpose is to provide innovative problem-solving opportunities that involve teamwork, collaboration, time management, imagination, and creativeness for our independent-thinking students. The children chosen to represent GIS at this event are Vedant Iyer, Tessa Atkinson, Liyana Kamar and Shann Chongwattananukul. Congratulations to these children; I hope you have a good day. A report will be in our March Newsletter. A further event is being arranged at St Andrews in Term 3 for children in Years 3 and 4. ISE On the afternoon of February 6 most teachers from Primary and Foundation will be going to ISE for staff training. They will leave school at 2.20pm. Children will stay at school and will be looked after by the remaining teachers and Teaching Assistants.

Activity Board Each month I will run an activity board in Primary where there are three activities a month with the results being given out in the newsletter. One activity will be a wordsearch, one activity will be an educational based puzzle or maths task and the third will be a colouring in competition. These children took part in the latest one: Joanna, Tanya, Jahnavi, Hansika, Peter, Vedant, Poppy, Thanvika, Hemakshi, Riddhi, Mary, Evan, Arun. Well done. From now on I will give one merit to each child who completes an activity.

Fitness training Every day, from about 4pm to 5pm, Mr Michael is leading circuit training sessions which involves the use of a Bulgarian Bag. At the moment Ms Jill, Ms Tara and Mr Beales are taking part. It is an intense workout for an hour but will increase fitness and muscular strength. The training is free. If you want to join them please e-mail Mr Michael on [email protected] .

Football kit orders for children and parents The Primary Football Kit is being made for us (it is the green kit on the left). Goalkeepers will wear the black long-sleeved kit on the right. The kit is made from the best material available and should last for a few years. If you want to buy your own kit the cost is 1,000 baht for the top, the shorts and the socks. You can choose your own number and have your name written on the back. We also have a black kit – this will be for the coaches and parents. If you want to buy one as well that is ok but we will play in the green kit. If you are interested in buying your own kit please see Mr Grisdale and hand in this slip.

From Mr Ball: Head of Secondary

Hello, This month is hotting up, despite the colder weather. Next week will see about 100 students and teachers from a variety of countries taking part in the second ever Secondary Drama Festival. This event is aimed at students in Years 7-9 and promises to be as exciting as it is educational. The students will be performing their final pieces at GIS on Saturday in the Secondary Main Hall. This is an event which I am personally looking forward to seeing. Whilst the FOBISSEA Drama Festival is coming to its finale, the FOBISSEA Music Festival, which GIS will host later this year, is beginning to enter the planning stages. Watch this space…. The final Mathematics challenge for Secondary will take place on Friday. I wish all the entrants good luck in this truly international challenge. The Long Reports for Years 11 and IB2 will be sent home to parents on the final day of this half term. These reports will have an examination focus, following on from their mock examinations. The students in Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and IB1 will receive Grade Cards. I hope that you are pleased with the effort that your child has put into their studies over the last half term. I must offer my congratulations to two students this month. My first congratulation goes to Susanna for her prestigious award from CIE. My second congratulation goes to Salena. There is a full write up with photographs about the achievements of both these students below. Ms Cooper had continued her excellent run on house activities this month with a House Mathematics challenge and a Dodgeball competition. Ms Cooper has run a wide variety of excellent lunchtime competitions and it is great to see the House system operating on a regular basis. It is important to mention that there are coursework deadlines upcoming for students in Year 11 and IB2. Students should be working hard on their coursework and seeking the advice of their teachers so that they can achieve the best mark they can. Lastly, I would like to wish the senior boys good luck in their basketball competition in Chang Mai .This is an annual event and will occur in mid-February.

Sage Ball Head of Secondary

Christmas Concert The Christmas Concert was held on December 11 in the Secondary Hall. Led by Mr Shiells, the show began with the choir singing 'Eja' and 'Infant Holy' and was followed by a stunning Key Stage 1 performance. The flute group played the Christmas classic 'A White Winter's Tale' then Mr Antonio's La Banda played 'El Camino' before Year 9's Berenice gave an animated reading of Benjamin Zephaniah's poem 'Talking Turkeys'. After an interval, Year 10 performed 'Shake Up Christmas', the school band JJSHN sang a powerful version of Mariah Carey's 'All I Want for Christmas and everyone stood to sing the traditional hymn 'O Come All Ye Faithful'. The evening built to a crescendo with the ukulele ensemble playing 'I Believe in Father Christmas', the Ceilidh Band's 'Rown Tree Suite' and then a special performance by Mr Ken, Miss Claire H and the staff band of 'Fairytale of New York' (below left). The evening ended with the choir and audience singing 'Hark the Herald Angel'. Well done to the Music Department for another cracking Christmas concert and congratulations to everyone who performed.

Susanna’s the Best in Thailand! Year 11 student Susanna Harms has been to Bangkok to collect a top award from Cambridge.

Susanna passed her IGCSE in German and gained such a good score she was given an Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award for her performance in the June 2012 examination. Her score was the best in Thailand for IGCSE German. Susanna was presented with her High Achievement award at a special ceremony at the Anglo Singapore International School in Bangkok. The prestigious awards are recognised by employers and universities around the world as proof of academic excellence.

Happy Birthday Izzat! Izzat (8B) celebrated his 13th birthday with friends at GIS. To mark the occasion, he brought in a birthday cake and snacks, which were appreciated by all his classmates!

Salena passes First Language! Year 11’s Salena Khanijou has already got her first IGCSE – before the GIS examination session even starts. Salena took her IGCSE First Language examination last November at the British Council in Bangkok. This month she received the results – and she was awarded an A grade. This is a difficult test, so this is an excellent achievement for Salena – well done!

Photography Club A new activity club for this term has been Photography with Mr Berry. Students have been going around school taking photos of everything from flowers to buildings as they learn all about angles, lenses and shutter speeds. The standard is amazingly high with a few students having a 'good eye' for incredible photos. Each week there is a theme, such as 'man-made objects' and 'people' week.

Footloose items are here! Merchandise from the Secondary production of Footloose is now in school and is ready to be given out. See Mr Liversidge for details. If you ordered and purchased a DVD, then you will be given a refund as the quality of the DVD was not good enough to sell. If you bring a memory stick or external

hard drive you can be given the raw footage from the show for free.

House Competitions

Slaves, Limbo and Dodgeball!

A flurry of House activities has been taking place over the past few weeks, Among them were a successful Limbo competition and a Mathematics Challenge. A Slave Auction was also held, where students and teachers offered to become ‘helpers’ for a day to whoever bid the highest for them! The money raised will support the students attending the FOBISSEA Drama Festival.

Music Examination Success for GIS Last November the Music department took a group of students up to Bangkok to sit their ABRSM Music examinations. These included Grade 1 piano, Grade 4 flute, and even Grade 8 piano! After a long wait we finally received some truly outstanding results. A big well done to Benjamin, Anushka, Reha, Jun Beom, Sarah, HyoJung and Ben B! And a special mention for HyoJung and Sarah who both passed Grade 8 piano – the highest grade possible! This actually gives them extra UCAS points for university entrance, so it is indeed a major achievement. Congratulations to you all. Mr Shiells

For the past year and a half the school has been using a virtual learning environment (VLE), called Moodle, to aid learning for students. The VLE started life with a pilot group of students in

Years 7 and 8 but has slowly expanded to include more members of the student body. Due to this, and future expansion, the VLE can now be accessed from the domain name:

Pizza Prize! By Abhi and Yash (9B) Recently Year 9B had a majestic feast at Pizza Company in Laemtong after winning the prestigious merit cup with an astonishing average. They beat Year 8L and Year 7E to take the top prize. All of Year 9B was excited and happy that their hard-earned merits paid off. There was a lot of chatting and laughter as orders were given and drinks were served. The lunch started with Pepsi and was then followed by pizza. All types of pizzas were ordered, including pepperoni, cheese and vegetarian. After the delicious pizza had been eaten, we had ice cream at Swenson’s and waffles for dessert. As time was limited we had to return, but even this couldn’t dampen the high morale. One of the students said that our next goal was to win the award again and we will work hard to do so.

Come Diving! GIS Scuba is growing in numbers with each trip seeing more and more people becoming qualified as divers or improving their dive education. Within the last few months five people have become qualified Open Water divers, one is halfway through an Advanced Open Water diver course and another has become a rescue diver, allowing her to rescue divers in need or distress. Our diving is varied with both shallow coral dives of less than 10 metres, deeper coral dives down to 18-20 metres and deep wreck diving down to 30 metres. A few of our divers are regularly using their underwater cameras to record the varied sealife we see and you can see this at http://scuba.gardenrayong.com. The website is quite new but we hope to add more information to it each time we dive.

IBThe News next dive trip will be on March 2; if you are interested please contact [email protected] for further details. Recycling takes a lot of bottles Here’s what a little recycling can achieve! Students put their empty plastic bottles in coloured bins during Term 1 (each bin corresponding to a House colour). IB students then collected the hundreds of bottles and sold them for cash. They raised more than 1,000 baht and with that money they were then able to buy plants for the primary area. The aim this term is to buy enough to decorate the eating area near the canteen. Well done if you donated a bottle!

IB in Special Visit IB students have been helping out at a special school near GIS. They managed to raise enough money to buy a trampoline for the children. Every week the IB students visit the school to interact with the youngsters there. Well done to IB for making a real difference to the children there.

FOBISSEA U13 Tournament GIS will be sending several teams to compete at a FOBISSEA U13 Tournament in Bangkok soon. The event will be staged at Bangkok Prep International School from March 14-17. Schools from all over Southeast Asia will be competing and our own GIS students will be going for gold in track and field, swimming, basketball and football. We are looking for sponsorships to help with sports uniforms for this international tournament. Sponsors will not only be helping the school, but their logo will appear on our shirts, guaranteeing significant exposure to an international audience. If you would like to help, please contact [email protected].

Garden Girls start season with stunning win against ISE The Under 13 Girls football team traveled to the International School of Eastern Seaboard on January 15 for the season opener full of confidence and was unlucky not to come away with several goals. Good goalkeeping from the ISE keeper producing excellent saves kept the GIS girls to a 1-0 win. The goal came in the last three minutes from a combination of passes between the girls, with Lily (Y8) passing the ball to Seren (Y8) whose shot went into the top corner of goal from an extremely tight angle. Great defense play from Sabrina Frazer (Y8) and Berenice (Y9) kept the ISE attack at bay throughout the game. Well done to all the players. Coach Edwards, U13 Girls Football Coach Unbeaten run continues In a hard-fought match the GIS girls played excellent football and continued their unbeaten run with a 0-0 result against REPS on January 22. The Under 13 girls played attacking football throughout and were unlucky not to sneak a goal in a great move which led to a shot from Anna (Year 8), but an excellent save from the REPS’ goalkeeper kept the score at 0-0. Brave goalkeeping from our own keeper GeeGee kept the GIS girls in the hunt for a win and the defence again was excellent with Sabrina F (Year 8) and Shaniya (Year 7) providing cover at the back. Well done to all the girls. Coach Edwards, Under 13 Girls Football Coach
