SMU NEWS Interpreting Services Newsletter

Faculty of Science In this issue: Updated ToS info Featured Resource Did you know

As a higher academic institution, SMU strongly believes in ongoing professional growth. With the purpose to enhance the skills of the pool of interpreters working in the SMU Faculty of Science and ultimately the level of service to the University community. Remember, “Professional development is a process, not an event.”

Updated Terms of Service Revised Terms of Service documents are available here. Thank you to everyone who provided such valuable feedback to version 1.0. The plan is to review the ToS twice yearly and update as needed. NEW: There are now three ToS documents: ’regular’, coursework, and conferences. Please review the updated ToS version. Changes were made primarily to sections: cancelled assignment expectations, newly added definitions section, safety section, and adding service fee guideline ranges. Information is also now suited to the ToS (regular, coursework, conference).

Did you know: The SMU School of the Environment hosts events on campus? Check out the calendar and Seminar Series lists for more details. The events are on a wide range of topics all related to the environment. If you’re free and in the area, why not enjoy these events and use them as prep.

Have you signed up for the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC) email mailing list? It’s a great resource, especially for upcoming webinars and training sessions. I have joined multiple webinars offered by NCIEC affiliate Gallaudet University Regional Interpreter Education Center (GURIEC) and they’re great. The presenters are experts in their field of research and bring new approaches to interpreting work. If you’re interested in viewing the archived webinars from the five NCIEC affiliates, click here. New webinars are typically free to join and available for a limited time to view (so you don’t necessarily have to be available when it’s happening live). After this limited time, there may be a charge to view depending on the webinar. If you’ve joined a particularly interesting webinar, let me know! Spread the knowledge! Please contact Ashley if you have any questions, feedback, concerns, awesome PD ideas, etc. at: [email protected] or 902-496-8761
