Achievement Badges in Blackboard: Signs of Success or Gaming the System? Facilitator: David Leitner, Ph.D., Assistant Professor Achievement badges are graphic representations of learning outcomes often associated with the "gamification" movement. Although this movement is controversial, interest in badges is growing because they complement traditional grades in a way that is specific, meaningful, portable, and even playful. For instance, an "Explorer" badge might be awarded to a student who discovers useful resources and shares them with classmates. That student could then share that badge with friends, family, or employers through social networks. This session will provide an overview of badges, the lessons learned in a semester of using badges (both positive and negative), and how badges might be used effectively in your course the future. Student Input on Grading Rubrics Facilitator: Jason Dockter, Ph.D., Professor, English Rubrics are regularly used to evaluate student work, but the very rubric used to evaluate a project can be an after-thought for students if they are not shared with students during the creation of that project. This results in a missed opportunity for learning. Even when rubrics are shared prior to use in grading, students might not fully understand how the rubric will be used or what the criteria on the rubric represents. To make rubrics more meaningful, and to use the rubric itself as a way to reinforce particular learning concepts, students can be involved in the creation of the very rubrics that will be used in evaluating an assignment. Come learn about this approach to creating project rubrics and see how it can fit into nearly any class activity.
