Intermediate 4 Unit 6 (Interchange 3) Prompt: Imagine that you ordered a product online, but when you received it, you were unhappy with it. Write a critical online review about the product. Explain the problems that the product has and make sure to include what needs to be done to the product. Use the grammar focus found in page 39 SB to help you describe the problems with the product. Example: I am not happy with my recent online purchase. A few weeks ago, I ordered a new mouse for my computer and two days ago, I finally received it. I was happy at first but I soon found out that the mouse does not work as it should. The mouse needs fixing. The ball inside the mouse keeps sticking to the mouse pad and the wire is pretty weak. On top of this, whenever I use it, my computer keeps crashing. The right click button on the mouse also needs to be adjusted and I get the impression that the product is not at all as it was described. I am very upset with my purchase and I will try to get a refund. Target language: wireless service, leaking, undercooked, shrinks, lining, torn, chipped, stained, cracked, lengthen, tighten, sharpen, break into, scratched, damaged, flickering, crashing, skipping, jamming, freezing, dropping, dump, loosen, widen, shorten, refund Grammar Focus: describing problems Need + gerund The oven needs adjusting. The alarm needs fixing. Need + passive infinitive It needs to be adjusted. It needs to be fixed. Keep + gerund Everything keeps burning. The alarm keeps going off. Suggested target: Writing topic sentences Every paragraph should include a topic sentence that identifies the main idea of the paragraph. A topic sentence is supposed to state the point the writer wishes to make about a subject. Generally, the topic sentence appears at the beginning of the paragraph and it is often the paragraph’s very first sentence. A paragraph’s topic sentence must be

general enough to express the paragraph’s overall subject. But it should be specific enough that the reader can understand the paragraph’s main subject and point. Example: the topic sentence for the example paragraph above is, “I am not happy with my recent online purchase”.
