Look girls, there is no need and no reason for you to stay with me. I am your old mother-inlaw but both of your husbands are now dead. I'm going back to my old home in Jerusalem, but both of you need to return to your families in Moab.

Orpah:

But Naomi, we really don't want to go back to Moab. You have been good to us and we want to stay with you. Besides, I'm not crazy about going back to my brother, Benjamin. He's a shepherd and I'm allergic to sheep!

Ruth:

Yeh, and I always wanted to visit Jerusalem in the tourist season. I want to get some collector spoons for my sister's kids.

Naomi:

Look girls, I know what you are trying to do. You want to look after your old mother-inlaw, but I really don't need your help. What you girls need are new husbands, to look after you when you are old. You've got to realize that I'm too old to have more sons. And besides, you girls would be too old to marry them if you did wait around.

Orpah:

Not another word, Mom-in-law. We are going to stick with you no matter how tough things get. Not that things will get tough, I mean,. ... will they?

Naomi:

You are forgetting something. The hand of God has not been with me. First my husband Elimelech dies. Then my two sons Mahlon and Kilion die. And here I am walking the long road to Judah. I can only wonder what will happen to me next.

Orpah:

You are serious aren't you? Hey, you know, what you say makes sense. Really, I should go back to my family. I could help Benjamin with the sheep. I mean, I could take ChlorTripolon for my allergies. It wouldn't be so bad!

Orpah exits Naomi:

Good-bye Orpah and God bless you. And you too Ruth, go back now!

Ruth:

Sorry Naomi. I think I'll tag along if you don't mind. I love you more than anyone back there. Besides, I'm allergic to Chlor-Tripolon.

Naomi:

Are you sure, dear?

Ruth:

Very sure! I want to be your family. I want to go where you go. I want to live among your people and I want to worship your God. Nothing except death shall separate us.

Naomi:

Very well then. I'll admit that I am very fond of you. I can sure see what my son saw in you. Now then, if I could just find a nice Jewish boy for you . . . . .

Exit stage.
