Impulsive and compulsive behaviour in Parkinson’s monitoring and information tool What is impulsive and compulsive behaviour?

Impulsive and compulsive behaviour is when a person can’t resist the temptation to carry out certain activities. Some Parkinson’s medication can increase the risk of this kind of behaviour, which can have a big impact on the person affected and those around them. This behaviour can include addictive gambling, eating and shopping, or an increase in sexual thoughts and feelings. You can find out more about this in the Impulsive and compulsive behaviour in Parkinson’s information sheet from Parkinson’s UK. If someone with Parkinson’s experiences any behaviour changes, or any form of impulsive or compulsive behaviour, this should be discussed with the specialist, Parkinson’s disease nurse specialist or GP as soon as possible. It is important to discuss impulsive and compulsive behaviour at every appointment. This tool is for use during discussions between a healthcare professional and a person with Parkinson’s.
