Home learning tasks per week

At Key Stage 3 students study both Geography and History as part of a humanities programme. They key areas are indicated below. Year 7/8 History What is History? – Students study the medieval realms of the Norman Conquests, the Feudal system and the impact of the Doomsday Book. They look at how castles changed and their importance.

Peasants Revolt – Carrying on the medieval theme, students look at life in Medieval towns, investigates the peasants revolt and understands the causes and effects of the Black death. Stuarts – Students study the life and times of the Stuarts. They look at the causes of civil war in the UK and they begin to understand how sources are a point of view.

Geography Exciting Explorers – Students are introduced to the

skills and knowledge that all successful Geographers need. They collect badges when they correctly demonstrate skills such as sketching and annotating, grid references and use of scale.

Assessment is via a test of these skills at the end of the unit. Students are given an opportunity to practice any skills that are identified in the test as needing development. Raging Rivers – Flooding is fast becoming a major

problem in the UK and in this unit students turn detective to find out what causes them, the problems that they cause and whether or not they can ever be truly stopped.

Assessment is via a written decision making activity and report towards the end of the unit. Students are given an opportunity to redraft and improve their first attempt using teacher feedback.

Industry and Empire – Students study changes in industry in the UK. They understand the role that the UK had in global industry. They study the rise and fall of the empire.

Wonderful Weather – Or not, if you live in the UK! In

Empire and Slavery – Students study how the rise of the empire had an impact in the slave trade. Liverpool’s role in this is analysed.

Assessment is via a group peer-assessed weather forecast presentation and a written news report about the effects of extreme weather. Students are given an opportunity to redraft and improve their first attempt using teacher feedback.

World War 1 – Students study the causes and effects of the Great War and analyse the impacts this had. They will look at how war has changed since those times.

Assessment is through a levelled assessment at the end of the unit where they recall and apply their knowledge from the unit. There is also an opportunity

to develop their argument skills through solving the mystery ‘Who is Zhang Yin and why does she like rubbish?’ Year 7 and Year 8 are assessed using National Curriculum standards. Independent learning is a key focus at Key Stage 3. All students are given home learning that can include written answers or research activities.
