The Howard School and Rainham Girls also received funding to deliver a Healthy Living club, but this was delayed until September 2009. There was approx. 93% attendance rate in all Lottery Secondaty clubs. l Youth Sports Trust funded Multi-Skill clubs

2 OSHL clubs at 2 Primary School’s, which included 38 pupils and 21 of which were special needs children.

l Application

for funding - Playground facility development project A second application for funding (phase 2) to the Extended Schools Services Team – Medway Council was successfully researched and compiled by School Sports Co-ordinators (SSCo’s). This was aimed at school’s remaining in the Partnership that had not already received a grant who planned to improve the quality and quantity of OSHL sports/play provision in their school for their pupils and the wider community. Many of the 24 School’s have now fully completed their playground development projects such as: improved storage and playground markings. The Extended Schools Services grant was for £55,500 plus a contribution of £7250 from 24 participating schools and the Partnership. ‘‘Since we have had the basketball equipment and markings, there’s been a lovely atmosphere in the playground and the pupils are much more active”. year 3 teacher, Saxon Way Primary.

l Trampolining and Gymnastics OSHL clubs

12 Primary Schools received 6 weeks coaching for years 2/3/4 during an OSHL club from an expert Gym and Trampolining Coach – Tony Lowe, 4 weeks at the school itself and 2 weeks at the Jumpers Rebound Centre. This approx. included 150 pupils and secured a School-Club Link with Gillingham Jumpers Trampolining club - for both parties.

Sports Coaching and Sport Unlimited funded OSHL clubs > We employed a full time Community Sports Club Link Officer (David Hitch) in December 2008 to build staff capacity across the Partnership through increased demand for paid and voluntary sports coaches, to deliver high quality OSHL sports clubs, for the beneift of young people. However the other remit of these coaches would be to help teachers to make these clubs more sustainable through coaches mentoring and training teacher’s/ T.A.’s at these clubs, with a view to making the teaching staff more confident and able to to deliver this type of sports club in the future. > The Howard Partnership staff, together with Greenacre Partnership applied for external funding: Sport Unlimited (Sport England funding for ‘semi-sporty children) and both Partnerships spent existing new funding ‘School Sports Coaching funding’ (from the government for ‘sporty children’), through: sharing the deployment of several sports coaches across the whole of Medway. David Hitch assessed schools need and community coach’s availability to co-ordinate a programme of OSHL clubs for the benefit of young people. Some student sports leaders were also mentored by sports coaches to assist at the OSHL sports clubs. David was also able to financially support some coaches through Coaching Scholarships in return for voluntary hours delivered in schools. The deployment of part-time Sports Coaches would not have been possible without partnership working with the Medway Council Sports Development Team who maintain the large Medway Sports Coach database (accessible to schools), which helps to fully screen and gain references for coaches. A training and development day was also organised by both Partnerships to support and train paid and voluntary sports coaches, working regularly for us throughout Medway. > 746 hours of School Sport Coaching hours during OSHL were delivered by approx. 40 coaches and students sports leaders. This included 31 actual OSHL clubs in schools with a range of 6 different sports (Athletics, Football, Hockey, Rugby, Table Tennis and Netball). > 42 hours of Sport Unlimited Coaching hours during OSHL were delivered also using these coaches/sports leaders which included 16 actual OSHL clubs in schools with a range of 8 different sports: Trampolining, Ice Hockey, Judo, Martial Arts, Yoga, Athletics, Hockey and Swimming.

l •SAS

(Sport After School) a series of various sports activities, led by qualified coaches and assisted by student sports leaders was organised by School Sports Co-ordinators (SSCo’s) at the Woodlands Primary School sports facility. This was a series of afterschool sports clubs. Sports included: Korfball, Futsal, Ice Hockey, Football, Table Tennis, Multi-Skills and Dance for yrs 2,3 and 4 pupils from local schools in Gillingham (as yrs 5 and 6 generally receive more OSHL sport and competition opportunities). Teachers that attended learnt from the experience of qualified coaches. Many thanks go to the Woodlands Primary School for provision of free sports facilities after-school and the Robert Napier School for the provision of mini bus transportation and student sports leaders assistance – this helped Coaches, Teachers and pupils from local primary schools.

We learnt a great deal from this project, mainly that Primary Link Teachers are not only extremely busy members of school staff, but if they cannot attend the after-school sports session for reasons of: staff meeting/parents evening/sickness/working parttime hours/attending staff meetings/attending other festivals or fixtures/leading other subjects within the school that PLT’s are also responsible for, as well as P.E., then the pupils trip to attend the SAS activities became impossible Therefore, we have come to the conclusion that PLT’s need much more staff support and funding to pay these potential: after-school sports supervisors to help deliver sport direct/transport pupils/support other coaches in the delivery of after-school sports clubs, for the benefit of young people.

l Young

Ambassadors (2 new students: Mitchell McCenzie – Robert Napier Secondary School and Parris Hoste – Rainham School for Girls ) Both were nominated by their Secondary School’s (either as good sports leaders or talented sports performers) and attended a Conference in October 2008 to learn how and what to do as a Young Ambassador for the benefit of other young people at various schools, throughout the Partnership, as well as their own school. Both have attended numerous school assemblies/ presentations/festivals/after-school clubs promoting the importance of sports participation and how we can encourage and support physical activity through friends, fellow pupils and becoming positive role models and mentors.

l Young Leaders Award programmes for Primary Schools

Approx. 20 Primary Schools worked with their SSCo to introduce a Young Leaders Award for years 5/6. Some pupils have been delegated as volunteers/playground buddies in the playground alongside Lunchtime supervisors during playtime/lunchtime as well as helping Teachers during P.E. lessons, OSHL sports clubs and at Festivals/Events. l A group of students from the Robert Napier Secondary School attended the Step into Sport Conference in the summer of 2009 and plan to help set up and support an Ice Hockey club after-school for primary schools children in partnership with their SSCo and Ice Hockey club in the autumn. l Approximately 180 student Sports Leaders from all Secondary Schools were actively involved in helping at the 6 Multi-Skills Festivals. l A Leadership Academy was organised thanks to partnership working with the Medway Council Sports Development Team in the delivery of 2 high quality Sports Leadership programmes and various other courses and student voluntary placements. Evaluation and Priorities Development Plan (EPD) is updated twice per year which gives updated achievements and targets/goals for the Partnership as a whole. Each year SSCo’s and PLT’s draft a short action plan based on their annual PESSYP data for their school to improve the five areas for development, directly for pupil benefit. As well as staff working in partnership to improve the above 5 main areas of work the Howard School Sport Partnership is also working toward Government PSA target: ‘Deliver a successful Olympic Games and Paralympic Games with a sustainable legacy and get more children and young people taking part in high quality PE and sport’ l Marketing and promotions The Howard School Sports Partnership website is kept up to date on a weekly basis. The website: www.howardssp.org.uk, various documents, plans, applications/bids for funding, competition entry forms, newsletters (twice per year) and promotional leaflets explaining the work of the Partnership are produced and promoted. We welcome ongoing customer (Teacher, pupil and parent/guardian) feedback and ideas for continually improving our service.
