Health Freedom Minute July 28, 2015

Woman Shocked by $38,000 Outpatient Fee Teresa Anderson calls it a rip-off. She went to the hospital for an outpatient eye procedure. She was in and out in three hours. When she had considered paying for it without insurance, the surgeonʼs staff had quoted her $3,500 for the surgery, the facility fee and anesthesia. Then the bills arrived. The surgeon, anesthesiologist and X-ray totaled just $2,250. But the hospitalʼs facility fee was a whopping $38,526. Anderson, who used to work for an insurer, says this is why health care costs are so high. She said she wasnʼt sure what surprised her more, the hospitalʼs charges or the fact that the insurer agreed to pay them. “Arizona womanʼs outpatient surgery bill an eye-popping $38,000,” Ken Alltucker, The Republic, May 14, 2015.
