Huge Premium Increases Coming Most people on the Obamacare exchanges get federal subsidies to cover the cost of their premiums. A judge just ruled the Obama administration is also illegally paying out-of-pocket costs as well. Taxpayers are picking up the tab. What you may not know is Obamacare also subsidizes insurance companies. But these subsidies to cover the cost of older and sicker people in the exchanges disappear at the end of this year – and the healthy people who were expected to enroll on the exchanges and pick up the slack never materialized. So health plans are jacking up their rates for individual insurance on and off the exchange. The average increase in New York is 17 percent.
