Health Freedom Minute May 23, 2011

Angst Over Patient Opt-Out in ACO Welcome to the Health Freedom Minute. This is Twila Brase, president of Citizensʼ Council for Health Freedom. Obamacare encourages Accountable Care Organizations - ACOs. We call the ACO the new HMO. Doctors and hospitals will join together, get capitated bundled payments from health plans and government, and be forced to figure out how to make the money last. The deadline for public comments on the proposed ACO rule is June 6. The comment by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives is enlightening. They oppose letting you opt-out of data sharing. The group writes, “The amount of data and information exchange between ACO participants will be enormous….We think the simplest answer is to remove patients from ACO participation if they refuse to share their data.” So if you want privacy, say no to the ACO.
