Paying Doctors for Performance Doesn't Work According to several studies, giving doctors bonuses for treating patients the government way is not working. Millions of Medicare dollars are going to doctors, clinics and hospitals that can pull together data showing at least some compliance with government treatment directives. But according to these studies, most patient care does not comply with federal performance requirements. This is good news because most doctors are still treating patients in the Hippocratic tradition — according to the patientʼs needs. However, lots of new doctors are being trained in medical school to leave their brains behind and follow the government-issued directives. Someday, bonuses wonʼt even be tried. Doctors will limit their treatment decisions to whatever is dictated by their computer screen.
