Health Freedom Minute February 25, 2016

Higher Insurance Premiums Still to Come Health insurance premiums will increase again this year for two reasons. First, insurers will be on their own for the first time, responsible for the full cost of Obamacare patients. The three-year program that has subsidized costs for expensive Obamacare patients goes away. So insurers will have to raise premiums to pay for the medical costs of these enrollees. Second, some people with individual policies off the exchange still have health plans that are not compliant with the Affordable Care Actʼs mandate on benefits. But this coming October, those plans must become compliant with the lawʼs mandates, offering all sorts of coverage that people may not want. This means higher premiums -- and unaffordable coverage. “Exchange Holdout Wellmark to Sell Exchange Plans for 2017,” Inside Health Insurance Exchanges, October 2015. “CMS raises reinsurance payouts to health insurers,” Bob Herman, Modern Healthcare, June 18, 2015.
