Should Apple Have Your Medical Records? Do you want Apple to have your medical record? Most people don’t realize that the electronic health record, or EHR, in their doctor’s office is usually not a closed system. Many clinics and most hospitals own the hardware but the data is often housed off-site by the developer of the EHR system. For example, Epic, a huge EHR company in Wisconsin, houses medical records of 64 percent of Americans. And now a news report says Apple may try to buy Athenahealth, a company that makes a cloud-based EHR used by clinics and small hospitals. Perhaps you should ask your doctor where your data is. “Epic Allows Patients to Share medical Records With New Tool,” Rachel Z.
