A Doctor Who Goes the Distance Are doctors willing to practice in smaller towns, or must patients travel from these hinterlands to bigger cities? Smaller towns may provide doctors with subsidies, loan forgiveness or housing to encourage them to set up a practice in the community. While many doctors may prefer to practice in larger towns some go the distance to meet their patients. An Arizona physician Ken Jackson, MD, used to travel by horseback deep into the Grand Canyon once a month to provide prenatal care in a small Native American village. It was the last place that the US Postal Service still made deliveries by mule! You might find such a local-minded doctor near you by checking JointheWedge.com “The Distribution of Doctors,” John Goodman’s Health Policy Blog, NCPA.org, January 31, 2011 (no longer online)
