Future success will be the focus of all students at Harbor Lights Middle School on March 27, with sixth-graders learning about financial planning, budgeting and saving money, seventh-graders on career presentations and eighth-graders on high school success. One of the goals of the morning for sixth-graders will be developing an understanding of how important college is for all students and how school performance now can translate into scholarships and grants to help pay for their education, decreasing their out of pocket expense. Sixth-graders will also participate in the Extreme Reality Store program put on by the Michigan Student Financial Aid Association with representatives from the University of Michigan, Western Michigan University and Hope College. The program is designed to teach students about financial planning, budgeting and saving money. One of the goals of their morning will be developing an understanding of how important college is for all students and how school performance now can translate into scholarships and grants to help pay for their education decreasing their out of pocket expense. Seventh-graders will be joined by the Macatawa Bay seventh-graders and spend their morning rotating between career presentations. Some of our highlighted presentations will be from Careerline Tech Center as well as a session on college presented by the college advisers from West Ottawa, Zeeland and Holland high schools. Eighth-graders will have a series of short workshops providing information on a smooth transition to the high school. Their sessions will be presented by high school students, Careerline Tech Center staff as well as a workshop presented by teachers on using social media wisely and safely. Throughout the week school wide activities such as college knowledge vocabulary, college knowledge trivia and college bingo will be played with prizes donated by local college representatives.
