GRADUATE STUDY opportunities Interested in furthering your studies by obtaining an MA in Geography? We offer an intimate learning environment where students work closely with faculty mentors to undertake research and complete courses in their field.

LOCATION

Saint Mary’s University is located in the historic port city of Halifax, Nova Scotia - a vibrant urban community of over 400,000 people. Halifax is a major educational and economic centre for Atlantic Canada, and a host of recreational opportunities await in ‘Canada’s Ocean Playground’.

Faculty & Thesis Projects

Cathy Conrad works primarily in the field of community-based research; developing research themes from local needs within both Canadian and international communities. Past research has focused on community-based environmental monitoring and water quality, but new research is expanding into climate refugees and clandestine migration.

Clandestine (illegal) migration from West Africa to the EU.

Philip Giles is a geomorphologist with interests in the analysis and application of satellite remotelysensed images and digital elevation models.  He has conducted research in coastal, glacial, aeolian, and fluvial geomorphic domains, recently with a focus on alluvial fans.

Humid-temperate alluvial fans in Yukon Territory.

Jason Grek-Martin is a cultural and historical geographer with broad interests in how places are constructed, contested, and imbued with complex meanings by individuals and communities.  His current research explores the processes of place-making primarily in the context of travel and tourism to heritage sites, especially those with a dark past.

Cruise ship tourism and place perceptions of Halifax and its surroundings.

Mathew Novak is an urban geographer who uses GIS to map patterns of change in the city.  His research focuses on the built form of cities, their historical development and contemporary management.

A survey of condominium residents in Halifax, NS.

Danika van Proosdij is a coastal geomorphologist who uses GIS, drones and field based measurements to understand how biophysical processes of coastal ecosystems respond to natural and anthropogenic drivers of change. Of particular interest is how ecosystem based adaptation tools (e.g. salt marsh restoration) and processes can be applied by communities and government agencies in temperate and tropical regions to better adapt to changing environmental conditions.

Coastal climate change vulnerability assessments and adaptation tools in Canada, Indian Ocean and the Caribbean

Cristian Suteanu is interested in our interactions with the environment and in their meanings. His research focuses mainly on the analysis and modeling of environmental systems, with applications regarding natural hazards, climate variability, and renewable energy.

Dynamic systems approaches to seismically active areas.

Community-based water monitoring and management in Canada and in Sub-Saharan Africa. Food and water security in marginalized communities. Perceptions of climate and climate refugees.

Coastal sand dunes in Atlantic Canada. Extracting morphometric information from digital elevation models.

Heritage tourism/dark tourism in Nova Scotia and beyond. Tourist destinations where imagined places (depicted in film, literature, etc.) intersect with real places.

Retail dynamics in inner-city revitalisation. E-commerce and social media presence of independent shops and services.

Best management practices for climate change adaptation in dykelands Implications of tidal energy extraction on sedimentary processes in shallow intertidal environments

Landslide dynamics. Wind energy. Environmental variability and natural hazard perception.
