GPS-based Rapid Tsunami Warning Scientists of the German Research Centre for Earth Sciences (GFZ), Potsdam, in a paper published in the Journal- Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences have brought out the exciting possibility of issuing a tsunami warning within minutes based on real-time GPS. Based on a case study of the 2011 Tohuku Earthquake of Japan, the authors simulated the situation in a warning centre. Processing of GPS data with high precision coupled with inversion for slip and tsunami propagation estimates enabled a three minute time lapse warning after the seismic event, which is unparalleled by any other method so far and holds great promise of disaster mitigation and in particular loss of life.
