The Terre Haute North cross country teams put on dominant — almost perfect — performances Tuesday at LaVern Gibson Championship Course to secure the programs’ fourth consecutive titles. Runners from Shakamak were the only thing stopping the North boys and girls teams from fashioning perfect sectional scores. The Lakers’ perennial state finalist, Drew Gambill, had no luck chasing down boys winner John Mascari, althoug he did hold off North’s strong secondary pack that finished third through seventh. “With the accomplishments he’s had the last few years, I knew [Mascari] was probably going to come out here with guns loaded,” Gambill said. “The goal was to stay with [Milton] Brinza and [Brian] Depasse. I felt the last mile I could probably hold them off. I thought Mascari was a little closer than I expected him to be. ”Mascari wasn’t trying to set any personal records with his time of 16 minutes, 9 seconds. “I just wanted to come out and win,” Mascari said. “It’s nice to turn around and see the whole team come in right behind you. That’s what I like.” North coach Lon McDonald, whose team is ranked fourth in the state and hopes to contend for a state title on the same course as Tuesday’s race, didn’t expect to win by such a wide outcome (17-67 over second-place Terre Haute South).
