The Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7) is a 7-item instrument used to briefly measure or assess one of the most common mental disorders. The cut off points for mild is a score of 5, for moderate is 10 and for severe anxiety is a score of 15. When using this screening tool, further evaluation is recommended when there is a score of 10 or higher. The GAD-7 is moderately good at screening three other common anxiety disorders like panic disorders, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Authors Dr. Kurt Kroenke, Dr. Robert Spitzer, and Dr. Janet Williams. To Access this Instrument Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7) Reliability and Validity From November of 2004 through June of 2005 a criterion-standard study was performed in 15 primary care clinics in the U.S. 965 patients who had completed the GAD-7 were also evaluated by a mental health professional. The GAD self-report scale diagnosis and the independent diagnoses made by the mental health professionals were compared and it showed that the GAD-7 had good reliability, criterion, construct, factorial, and procedural validity. Making the GAD-7 a valid and efficient took for screening for generalized anxiety disorders and even assessing its severity in a clinical practice scene.
