Why Superintendent Doctorate at SIUE?

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville offers a program of study leading to the Education Doctorate (Ed.D.) in educational leadership. The program is designed for practicing P-12 school administrators who want to pursue careers as superintendents or school district leaders. Through doctoral study, they develop expertise in using research to make system-wide changes that benefit all students within the school district.

Program Description

The program of study consists of fifty-four (54) semester hours beyond the master’s degree. The curriculum is structured into four parts: 1. Study of foundational theory of school district leadership (27 semester hours). 2. Supervised internship (3 semester hours) in which candidates apply theory in a school district setting. 3. Advanced analysis (9 semester hours) of current issues facing superintendents 4. Research study and application (15 semester hours). After successfully completing parts 1 and 2 above, candidates earn both the Ed.S. degree and Illinois superintendent endorsement. Before advancing to doctoral candidacy (and the final 9 hours of study), students must pass a qualifying examination. Persons admitted to the Education Doctorate program work in a cohort. They typically take two courses per semester (fall, spring, summer) and earn the Ed.S. and Illinois superintendent endorsement after two years. Ed.D. completion requires an additional two years. Please note: Tuition waivers will not be accepted for the Ed.D. program.

Admission Requirements

There are three possible entry points to the Ed.D. degree. • After completion of a master’s degree and certification as a building level administrator; • While working towards superintendent certification and the Ed.S in educational administration; • After completion of the Ed.S. and superintendent certification (must be within the past ten years); Regardless of entry point, acceptance is competitive, and exceptional candidates are selected annually. Applicants should have a minimum grade point average of 3.25, possess an Illinois Type 75 certificate or its equivalent, and hold or have held a school administrative position requiring an Illinois Type 75 certificate or equivalent.
