Coming to Canada means leaving friends and family behind, as well as all of the familiar things from your homeland, such as food, routine, and your place in the community. You have to start over, make new friends and build a new life. Making friends was easy when we were children and teenagers, but as adults it’s harder as older people have more routines and are busy with work and family. They have less time and energy to make new friends. But, there are ways to overcome the challenges of re-socialization and to begin developing new relationships with people. Friendship and Socializing is the seventh workshop in Let’s Talk About It! a series that introduces participants to many of the aspects that make up Canada’s unique culture and society. By taking part, newcomers can expect a boost in self-confidence and a greater sense of belonging in Canada. Topics include:      

Defining friendship and identifying the qualities of one Agents of socialization and the process of re-socialization Ways to initiate conversation with other people Advantages and disadvantages of online dating Using Facebook and other social media to develop new friendships Toronto’s night life and Toronto’s Fun Guide

Let’s Talk About It! offers participants an experiential learning journey. Topics are covered through fun and thought-provoking activities and discussion.
