Student teaching varies by program, ranging from 12 to 15 weeks. Note: Ohio Passing Scores that are over 200 are older versions of the Praxis II test in that area N/A — Hiram College does not offer programs in these licensure areas. * Hiram College no longer offers a program in this licensure area. ** The national passing rate is calculated at Ohio’s cut scores, which are among the highest in the nation. For instance, Ohio requires the highest cut score in Principles of Learning and Teaching 5-9 (middle childhood) and ranks second in Principles of Learning and Teaching in K-6 and 712 (early childhood and adolescent/young adult). *** No pass rate percentage is calculated when fewer than 10 teacher candidates take the Praxis II test.

HI R AM C OLLEG E IN S T IT U T IO N A L REPO RT ON THE QUALI TY O F T E A C H E R PR E PARATI ON Mission: Our mission at Hiram College is to enable students of all ages to develop as intellectually alive, socially responsible, ethical citizens ready for leadership and for continuous personal and professional growth. We are committed to fostering a rigorous and demanding intellectual environment with an able, carefully selected student body and a strong, dedicated faculty; to maintaining a creative and value-based curriculum; and to maintaining a mentoring community which integrates academic life with the total campus experience; fosters mutual regard and responsibility among students, faculty, staff, and village residents; and honors our historical traditions and environment. Since its founding in 1850, Hiram College has prepared teachers within the liberal arts tradition. This preparation teaches students to be accomplished writers, and encourages them to learn to think well and with discipline. Students also learn to be keen and critical observers of how the world works-to see issues, alternatives, solutions and aspects of life that more narrowly trained minds will not. These skills, when combined with knowledge in a subject and in the art and science of teaching, are the finest teacher preparation students can attain. Teacher Preparation: Hiram College offers licensure in early childhood, middle childhood, integrated language arts, integrated mathematics, integrated social studies, integrated science, life science, life science/chemistry, life science/physics, physical sciences, drama/theatre, music, visual arts, French, German, and Spanish. Student Characteristics: The Department of Education has a fulltime enrollment of 85 undergraduate students; 61 additional students are completing requirements for admission into the program. The average grade point average for students completing licensure in 1999-2000 was 3.39. Thirteen percent of Hiram College students are minority students; two percent are international students.

Admission Requirements: Admission to Teacher Education: Requirements include a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average as well as a 2.5 in coursework in professional education and the licensure area; successful completion of coursework in educational foundations; and demonstration of basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Admission to Student Teaching: Students must be seniors who have maintained a minimum 2.5 grade point average in all areas described above; have completed 300 hours of clinical experiences; and have been approved by the Department of Education and the faculty in the adolescent or multi-age licensure area. * Grade point average requirements have been raised to 3.0 for the entering class of 2001.

Accreditation: Hiram College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Teacher licensure programs have been approved by the Ohio Department of Education.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E S : • Clinical experiences are integrated throughout the professional education curriculum and are closely supervised by education faculty. • Hiram College's 12-3 academic calendar is unique to the nation and provides an excellent opportunity for intensive clinical experiences. • Hiram's education program boasts an excellent job placement record. Eighty percent of our teachers graduating in 1999 are now teaching full-time in their licensure area. Others are pursuing advanced degrees. • Over fifty percent of Hiram College students take advantage of international study opportunities. Some teacher education graduates have continued their international interests by teaching in countries such as Argentina, France, and Japan.
