First Aid Policy 1.

Purpose The purpose of this procedure is to provide guidance to all Community staff and managers in regards to accessing and delivering first aid to service users and staff. Effective emergency treatment before professional help arrives can go a long way to reducing the effects of illness and injury, and indeed save someone’s life (First Aid Made Easy – Nigel Barraclough).

Definition “First aid is the initial assistance or treatment given to someone who is injured or suddenly taken ill”. Key Holder – Means a staff member designated as responsible for the safe keeping of the medicines and cash keys. This person would be identified within the 24 Hour Report Book.

3.

Provision for First Aid

3.1.

Training All Future Directions CIC staff, including Operational Network Managers will be trained in accordance with the Future Directions CIC’s basic first aid course (currently 1 day) and will thereafter undertake a refresher at least once every 3 years. 3.1.1. Induction All new starters to Future Directions CIC will undertake a basic awareness (LDQ Award) first aid training as part of their induction to meet the standards of Emergency First Aid at Work certified by the Health and Safety Executive and valid for 1 year. Once certificate has expired, thereafter to complete 1 day basic first aid training every 3 years. 3.1.2. Team Managers It is the Team Managers responsibility to monitor staff training ensuring that staff attend a basic first aid course every 3 years. Individual Staff Training Records of training will be maintained in each home by the Team Manager (centrally held records are available from Marle House). 3.1.3. Marle House Secretarial staff will undertake the 1 day basic first aid training. Thereafter the Office Manager will ensure that staff undertake 3 yearly updates.

Operations Managers and Operational Network Managers have responsibility in ensuring that staff within their sphere of management are up to date with the first aid training requirement. Training will be monitored through annual appraisal (PDP) and supervision. NB: 3.2.

All staff have a personal responsibility to ensure that they are up to date with training.

First Aid Boxes A first aid box will be made available within each home and office base. This must at all times be located in an easily accessible location and is available for use with staff, service users and visitors. The first aid box must include items listed in Appendix A. Vehicle – where a home has a lease/motability vehicle, a first aid box will be available in the vehicle. The Team Manager will ensure that the box is stocked in accordance with the Contents List (Appendix A). Responsibility for checking/restocking – a person will be nominated in each area. NB:

It is not permitted to store anything in the first aid box other than the items on the approved list.

Where soap, water and disposable drying materials are not available for first aid purposes, individually wrapped moist clean wipes will be provided in the box. 3.2.1. Home Areas It is the responsibility of the Team Manager to ensure that first aid boxes are fully stocked. The Team Manager may delegate this responsibility to support staff. Checks of the box must be carried out at least once a week (a record of the check will be entered in the 24 Hour Report Book). 3.2.2. Marle House The Office Manager will ensure that first aid boxes are stocked accordingly. (The Office Manager may delegate this responsibility). Checks of the box must be carried out at least once a week. A record of checks will be maintained (see Appendix B).

Treatment/Emergency Situations Where a first aid situation arises, a person trained in basic first aid (see Section 3.1) will provide any immediate first aid treatment and/or referral for further treatment, e.g. calling the Ambulance Service in serious cases or arranging other appropriate transport to convey persons to Accident and Emergency Department etc.

The Team Manager (or Key Holder) will also ensure that: 

where an incident is serious that the Operational Network Manager or if out of hours the On Call Manager is notified, as soon as reasonably practicable.



In accordance with Future Directions CIC’s Incident Reporting System, a PRISM or paper based incident report is completed, either with the casualty or, if not able to do so, on their behalf if the casualty is attending at an A & E Department etc.

Operational Network Manager Responsibility It is the responsibility of the Operational Network Manager to notify:-

Where a staff members injuries result in incapacity from work for more than 3 consecutive days (excluding the day of the accident) or there is an overnight stay in Hospital, that the RIDDOR responsible manager is informed by e-mail or verbally.



The incident report (paper-based or electronic PRISM report) by updating the RIDDOR section of PRISM. (Future Directions CIC’s Responsible Person for reporting RIDDOR (Service Manager, Facilities) is notified by PRISM).



SARS: If the injury is the result of an assault by a service user on staff then the PARS section of the PRISM report must also be completed.

Future Directions CIC Offices (Marle House) Where a first aid situation arises a person trained in basic first aid (see Section 2.1) will provide any immediate first aid treatment and/or referral for further treatment, e.g. calling the Ambulance Service in serious cases or arranging other appropriate transport to convey persons to Accident and Emergency Department etc. Where appropriate this may be by contacting NHS Direct for advice. The person providing the treatment and/or advice will ensure that the necessary PRISM report is completed (see Section 4 above).
