JNU INCIDENCE The whole month of climate transition was stuffed with the blend of hot air of patriotism, an echo of antinational slogans and some crisp politics. The renowned institute of the country, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), gave freedom to some students to shout antinational slogans in the event held on the death anniversary of the Parliament attacker, Afzal Guru. For this reason, the JNU Students’ Union President Kanhaiya Lal was arrested by the Delhi police on 13th February. The whole atmosphere has been filled with hot debates and discussions on the topic. Some are in support of right to freedom of expression while some go and beat Kanhaiya Lal just before he was presented in the court. Some have got the chance to come in the limelight by giving long speeches on patriotism while some have got ample chance to play brilliant politics. Kanhaiya Lal says that he is an Indian and has full trust on the constitution but who cares to listen to this! Politicians only know to do politics and media only knows to make breaking news. See how only one event has given so much fame to many persons! The recent news in New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has deepened the state of tension, suspicion and discord that has afflicted the country over the past several years. At one level, the events bring to

sharp focus the mindset of BJP, the partisanship of university and law enforcement authorities, the brazenness of lawbreakers, the nature of student politics and the inflammatory role of some television channels. Every one of these aspects demands serious debate, review and a new broad consensus if we are to retain our hardwon and hard preserved freedoms. At another level, the event call upon us as citizens to reflect on our relationship with the entity that we call India; to reflect on the nature of the feeling we have for India, and indeed, what is the “India” that we have feelings for. The mindless frenzy which a lot of us have got ourselves into over the alleged chanting of antiIndia slogans at JNU is partly a symptom of the lack of a clear personal understanding of our own feelings of love, patriotism, nationalism, civic responsibility and devotion. Having not reflected on this, we fall for the seductive tunes of entrepreneurs of emotion, who often use our feelings to promote their own political ambition. It is the nature of democratic politics for ambitious politicians to use emotions to climb up the ladder of power. The problem is not manipulativeness or political ambition; it is the willingness with which otherwise sensible citizens allow themselves to follow the Piper. These are times when outrage broadcasts from television

studios merge with the echo chambers of social media and break into violence on our streets. If we are not to make grievous mistakes in the name of such good things as fighting corruption or countering antinationals, we, the people, must reflect. If you go by much of the public debate playing out in the media, we are asked to choose between liberalism and nationalism. Ideologues will tell you that nationalists cannot be liberal and liberals cannot be nationalist. You have to choose one side. If you do not, you will be disparaged as a fence sitter. Here is the point though: from its earliest origins, Indian nationalism has been liberal in nature. The signature of freedom movement was to expel the British, without hatred. The setting up of a secular state with a liberal constitution in the face of a violent demand for and reaction to the creation of a Muslim Pakistan is a remarkable monument to that national sentiment. These are times when outrage broadcasts from television studios merge with the echo chambers of social media and break into violence on our streets. If we are not to make grievous mistakes in the name of such good things as fighting corruption or countering anti-nationals, we, the people, must reflect. We can be patriotic without being nationalists. We can be liberal without

being libertarians. We are like this only.

MOVIE REVIEW

Shagufta Naaz

Film: Sanam Re Cast: Pulkit Samrat, Yami Gautam, Urvashi Rautela, Rishi Kapoor Director: Divya Khosla Kumar Genre: Romance, Drama Rating: 2/5 Plot: Let’s give credit to Divya Khosla Kumar for beginning the story on a picturesque note. You marvel the scenic locales alongside searching for intense love, but the slow-paced office humour, chiefly driven by Manoj Joshi, denies you the solace you crave for.

It all starts there, when Aakash (Pulkit Samrat) and Shruti (Yami Gautam) are still kids. As destiny planned, they fall in love with each other. Clichéd, did you just say? Wait, there’s more. As expected, they choose separate paths, but destiny decides this is not how they are supposed to live their lives. What do we believe in: Love, luck or both? Can love happen twice, or with another person? You know the usual questions. The director has given clear pointers to her actors. Pulkit needs to look a confused guy; Yami should be the innocent mountain beauty. But then, what will Urvashi Rautela do in this set-up? Who will enhance the hotness quotient otherwise? Nothing wrong in executing all this, but haven’t we lost that beautiful story we started with in this chaos? Superbly backed up by its music, Sanam Re shows potential in patches. The actors have been made to do some really silly things. Thankfully, Pulkit Samrat understands the value of subdued acting and steps away from being a part of the trademark Bollywood hamming. Ironically, the background score keeps reminding you of ‘Tum Bin’, and that puts even more spotlight on the lack of intensity in Sanam Re. This one has ingredients, but they are not mixed in the right amount. Too much fascination with ‘glamour’ restricts it from becoming a satisfactory cinematic version of Nicholas Sparks’ novels. To be fair with the team of Sanam Re, it is not a bad watch, not a great watch either! The film starts off on a promising note, but soon goes off the track.

NATHURAM GODSE The Story of an Assassin Book: NATHURAM GODSE The Story of an Assassin

Publication date: 30 January 2016 Language: English Author: Anup Ashok Sardesai PLOT- This book narrates the story of Nathuram Vinayakrao Godse who died an untimely death and whose brother suffered a life of immense mental torture. It also speaks of the family of Godse who faced countless abuses and humiliations. The author through the book claims that this was all mended because of Godse's love for his motherland. It also says Godse is India's most hated criminal.

Besides, the book justifies Godse's act of killing Mahatma Gandhi by stating that he was not able to bear the pressure of partition of his country in front of his eyes. It contains the original statement of Nathuram Gosde from the trials of the case held in the Red Fort. The reason that forced Godse to decide that he must turn into a killer on 12 January is also highlighted. It also speaks about the role of the conspirators: Narayan Apte, Vishnu Karkare, Madanlal Pahwa and Gopal Godse. It also dwells on the paradoxes: if an outsider was involved? Could the police have prevented the murder? It also weighs the possibility of the involvement of influential organizations and foreign powers to destabilize the newly formed nation of India and the shift of political balance in favor of some political fronts.

It is a great read and one of the most talked about phenomenon since its release.

PLACE TO VISIT MURUD JANJIRA Murud Janjira is a picturesque little fishing village on the lush western coast of Maharastra (150 kms south of Mumbai), once the capital of the former state of Janjira. The pride of Murud Janjira, Janjira Fort, is the only one of its kind. It is sea fort constructed by Malik Ambar who was a minister in the court of Sultan of Ahmednagar. This fort took 22 years to build and is constructed on 22 acres of land. The fort built in 17th century, is almost intact even today, despite the ravages of wind and tide, a testimony to marvels of ancient engineering. This fort, till this day, remains unconquered. Even the great Maratha Shivaji failed to conquer it. It has only been surrendered once by the Siddis to the Britishers, that too without a fight. In a journey back in history, visitors can gain access to the Janjira fort from Rajapuri, a small village on the coast. After a ride in a small boat, one can enter the fort through the main entrance. The fort is oval shaped instead of the usual oblong or

Saurodeep Chaterjee

square shape. The fort wall is about 40 feet high and has 19 rounded porches or arches, some of which still have cannons mounted on them, including the famous cannon Kalaal Baangadi.

Gazing into the horizon from the ramparts of this magnificent fort overlooking the sea, one can only acknowledge its great strength that withstood a number of invasions. Ajikya Fort which means never been conquered. Not unique though its concepts are mind boggling. An island in the Indian ocean converted to a citadel and a place to live for 2000 plus people. Opposite to this is another fort right in the middle of the ocean built by Sambhaji Maharaj. It is a perfect place if you are thinking to plan an adventurous and thrilling vacation. Once in a life time people must visit this beautiful place. Everyone must visit this place.
