Useful Information

Marrying world-class facilities with a rich history dating back nearly 20 centuries ago, Bintan is where modern comforts meet tradition and can be reached via a mere 60 minutes catamaran ride from Singapore. 'Bintan Resorts' is a multi-award winning, integrated tropical beach resort destination covering the entire northern coast of the Indonesian island of Bintan. Catering to all senses, Bintan Resorts is host to many premier class beach resorts, designer golf courses, as well as a wide array of recreational facilities and attractions for those looking for the perfect escape. For the more adventurous, the outside beckons with a local community steeped in rich Bugis, Chinese, Malay and the unique Orang Laut (sea gypsies) cultures. Once an unrivalled trading port in the region, Bintan is waiting to be re-discovered as a gem that encapsulates diverse cultures, the past with the present, and the polished with the idyllic.

Escape the mundane. Unwind the senses. Discover the colours.

Welcome to Bintan Resorts!

Unwind Your Palate, Go Local! No visit to Bintan is complete without trying out some of Indonesia’s most wellknown local fare. Available in almost any eating place found on Bintan, be immersed in the Bintan way of life, through the stomach!

1

Gong Gong

The French have their escargot, Bintan has the Gong Gong. The Gong Gong is a type of sea snail found in the waters around Bintan Island and boiled to perfection. Using a toothpick (instead of a fork), its meat is taken out from its shell and dipped in delectable sauces. It is so iconic that it now adorns the façade of the new Tanjung Pinang Tourism Information Centre.

Ikan Bakar Ikan Bakar is a popular Indonesian dish of charcoal grilled fresh fish off Bintan’s fishermen’s nets. Some of the more common types of fish used include the freshwater gourami and baronang (rabbit fish). Typically marinated with a mixture of species, coated with kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) and served with a spicy dipping sauce.

3

Otak Otak

Made from the catch of local fishermen, Otak Otak is as fresh as it gets. Barbecued over charcoal flames and wrapped in banana leafs for added fragrance, this local delicacy comes in a choice of prawn, squid or fish meat. Extremely cheap and delicious, it can be found along Kawal. One thing is for sure, one is never enough. LOCAL DELICACIES

03

Nasi Padang Go local with Nasi Padang, the locals’ staple diet. Nasi Padang represents community harmony at its best, with Padang rice being served together with an array of Indonesian dishes, and enjoyed together as a group. Some restaurants even serve it 'hidang' style, where dishes are laid out in front of customers, and customers pay only for the dishes they eat.

5

Tape

Tape (ta-peh) or Tapai (ta-pie) is fermented tapioca wrapped in banana leaf, and has an interesting rum taste that’s sweet and slightly sour. Its texture is like the durian, the regionally well-known 'King of Fruits'. This local delight can only be found

6

in Bintan.

Ayam Penyet

Ayam Penyet is another Indonesian specialty which cannot be missed. Chicken meat is fried crisp to a deep golden brown and then smashed with a pestle against mortar, to make it softer. It is then usually served with slices of cucumber, fried tofu, tempeh and spicy sambal chili that will add

7

that extra kick to the dish.

Ayam Presto

Ever tried eating a whole chicken, including the bones? Ayam Presto is prepared by having chicken cooked in a pressure cooker for long hours with a secret blend of ingredients (it can be revealed that there’s ginger, turmeric and some other spices, but that’s all!), and then fried to crispy perfection. This unique soft bone chicken has consistently delighted the taste buds of travellers all over the world that there would be literally nothing left after the meal.

8

Pizza

Pizza Casa Italia is tucked away at the idyllic Trikora coast, but that has not deterred people from travelling to the middle of nowhere just to order a takeaway or two. With the gooiest cheese and the crunchiest thin crust, Pizza Casa Italia even serves up localised flavours such as Pizza Cornet (corned beef), Pizza Jagung (corn), Pizza Ayam (chicken) and Pizza Sosis (chicken sausage).

Pisang Keju A unique innovation by the locals, Pisang Keju is actually fried banana fritters sprinkled generously with cheese and doused with chocolate sauce or condensed milk. It is commonly found in restaurants and street stalls. Sweet and savoury, forget

10

the calorie count for a while and indulge in this guilty pleasure.

Satay

Another common local dish is Satay, which is basically a variety of skewered meat, seasoned and grilled. Choose your meats between lamb, chicken and beef. It is then served with cucumbers, kueh tupat (rice cakes), onions and a

11

flavourful peanut sauce.

Indo Mee Goreng

A popular dish amongst the locals, Indo Mee Goreng is simply instant noodles served with egg and fried onions that can be found in Pujasera, a local hawker centre, and Warung Yeah!, a recent addition to the food options at Lagoi Bay. For the more daring, it is an extremely flavourful and easy dish to whip up, and can be bought from supermarkets and convenience stores dotted all over Bintan.

HEART OF BINTAN (LAGOI BAY)

15

Discover Art. Discover Craft.

1

Craft from the Sea Be amazed by a group of talented artists that produce majestic ship models using fish bones and skin! The ship vessel models are so intricately done up with the sails being made of fish skin. Specially treated, these artefacts have no lingering smell at all. In addition, fish scales are used to produce unique ornaments and brooches, while seashells, including Gong Gong shells, are meticulously used to make bike models, vases, mirrors and lamps. Affordably priced, they can be found at the galleries of Dekranasda Kabupaten Bintan in Kijang and Plaza Lagoi.

2

Pandan Leaf Weaving A common South East Asian art-form is the use of leaves for weaving. In Bintan, pandan leaves are meticulously woven into useable products like mats, bags and baskets.

3

Batik Art Arguably the most popular art-form associated with Indonesia is Batik art, which is a technique of wax-resist dying applied to cloth. Batik is produced traditionally in two ways – by using a canting (spouted tool), or by using a cap (copper stamp). Batik products, such as bags, pouches and scarves, can be found all over the island. Some resorts even offer batik painting classes.

Discover the Colours: Culture, History and Heritage With a mix of diverse cultures found on the island, and a history dating centuries back, visitors to Bintan are certainly in for a remarkable cultural and historical journey. From ancient sites to yesterday’s lifestyle, Bintan’s story is waiting to be told.

1

Panglong Village, Berakit Panglong Village is the largest Orang Laut (Sea Gypsies) village in Bintan. Travel back in time in this rustic village by the river, and discover a way of life which begins, develops and ends on the sea, and that has been around for hundreds of years. As with visiting a friend’s home, you may wish to bring along small gifts for the children, such as candies or snacks.

2

Pulau Penyengat Board a pompong (water taxi) from the Tanjung Pinang jetty and travel back in time with a visit to Penyengat Island. It is known as the abode of the kings and was the seat of power during the last phase of the Malay Kingdom. Here, you can board a becak (motorised trishaw) to visit the various historical sites - palace ruins and royal mausoleums all adorn in hues of yellow and green. Built in the 18th century using egg whites as the bonding agent, Masjid Raya Sultan Riau (Sultan of Riau's Grand Mosque) is still remarkably wellpreserved and majestic. Within its sacred grounds is a rare 150-year old hand-written Quran. A short climb at the Fort Bukit Kursi will reveal a spectacular view of rusting cannons casting glances over the sea. Awarded the "Certificate of Excellence" by TripAdvisor, the island and all its attractions are pending listing as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

28

CULTURE, HISTORY AND HERITAGE

3

Vihara Avalokitesvara Graha Located in Tanjung Pinang, the temple is home to one of the tallest Goddess of Mercy statue in Southeast Asia. Marvel at the grand statue made of brass and coated with 22 carat gold. This unique temple also has an impressive dragon fruit plantation at the front of the temple.

4

Rumah Arang Explore two charcoal kilns built in the 90s. These unique dome shaped buildings are made of bricks, and arranged like an igloo. Such kilns were commonly used by locals before the Indonesian government prohibited the burning of mangrove wood to create charcoal and can be found all over the island.

5

Senggarang Village Temple hop in Senggarang Village. This unique village constructed over sea is believed to be the first home for Chinese immigrants hundreds of years ago, and is where some of Bintan's oldest temples can be found. Built to give thanks for a safe sea voyage, Vihara Dharma Sasana houses four temples that pay homage to different Buddhism deities. And just a stone’s throw away, be awed by the power of nature when studying how the trunks of ancient trees intertwined around the structure of the Banyan Tree Temple, and literally has become part of its architecture. Visitors can go for a South Bintan tour to see both Senggarang Village and visit Pulau Penyengat.

Here, a beautiful portrayal of the 'Stations of the Cross' tells the story which has captured the hearts of millions around the world. Follow the trail up to the little quintessential chapel and look out for the statue of Santa Maria well-preserved in a cave. This unique religious site is said to have been built long ago by a Dutch priest, with newer parts of the site added by sea gypsies from Vietnam, and Catholics from East Timor. During weekends, this sanctuary is usually filled with locals as they come here to pray.

Tanjung Uban North-west of Bintan island lies Tanjung Uban, the second largest town after Tanjung Pinang. Renowned for its quaint and rustic atmosphere, Tanjung Uban offers a window for visitors to have a look at the commercial scene. Drive through the town centre and see the fast-growing cottage industry businesses like motorcycle repairs, kubah (mosque dome) factories and brick-making factories. Stop at the coastal fishing village, where you will see ‘Bugis’ homes built on stilts, and kelongs,

staking their positions at sea.

Vihara Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (500 Lohan Temple) Be welcomed by numerous statues of arhats found within Vihara Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. Each life-like stone statue is unique with its own distinct facial expressions and features. For those familiar with Chinese culture, try finding Journey to the West’s Tripitaka or Romance of the Three Kingdoms' Guan Gong. Take up the mental challenge of counting all the statues – no one has gotten it right the first time!

CULTURE, HISTORY AND HERITAGE

Discover the Wild Side Situated in the tropics, and still relatively untouched by modern development, Bintan’s wildlife is certainly a different experience for urban dwellers. And even as newer developments happen, the authorities in Bintan have made special effort to preserve enclaves of nature.

Mangrove Discovery Tour This eco adventure is a back-to-nature encounter with the wonders of Bintan Resorts’ mangrove forests. These forests play an important role in the control of soil erosion. At the same time, they form a natural filter for water flowing from Bintan to our coasts, preventing siltation of seagrass beds and coral reefs. Journey through the Sebung River and the observant visitor might also catch a glimpse of a variety of exotic wildlife, from denizens of the water, creatures of the land, to birds of the air. For an unforgettable magical experience, go on a night-tour and let the glow of fireflies and the sparkle in the skies light up your journey through the river.

Turtle Conservation Efforts Turtle conservation was started by Bintan Resorts in 2004. Since then, Bintan Resorts has been working closely with the community to save nesting hawksbill turtles in North Bintan. The efforts have borne good results, with more than 4,500 turtles hatched and egg poaching by locals reduced from 91% in 2004 to 12% in 2010. Currently seasonal hawksbill hatcheries can be found in Nirwana Gardens, Angsana Bintan, Banyan Tree Bintan and Club Med Bintan. All seasonal turtle releases can be followed for free and each resort can provide further information on release dates. Conservation efforts are also done at White Sands Island.

Gurun Pasir Busung and Telaga Biru An amazing site of sand dunes and turquoise blue lagoons in the midst of the tropical island, Gurun Pasir Busung and Telaga Biru used to be quarries for sand mining. Years of disuse allowed the sand to form mounds like that of a desert and has transformed the area into a hidden photography gem. Stop by along the way to Tanjung Uban to explore this unique spot. There are also standees of horses and camels for even more wonky photos! NATURE AND WILDLIFE

Safari Lagoi Safari Lagoi is home to an array of rescued and endangered animals including orangutan, Komodo dragon, sun bear, elephant, a 6 metre crocodile and many more! There is also an aviary that is filled with vibrant and beautiful birds. What’s more, the area encompasses an eco-farm that harvests rice, corn, dragon fruits, and other seasonal crops. Get an eye-opening, educational and fun experience, and witness local produce in their most natural states. Finally, end the day with sweet rosella tea, fresh fruits and rojak made from ingredients harvested from the farm after a tour.

EcoVillage Senggiling Be it a day-trip or stayover here, EcoVillage Senggiling has many things in store for every family. There’s a man-made lake in the vicinity where fishing can be done, and camping areas to get the full outdoor experience, complete with friendly cows along the way! But don’t miss out on learning about the signature clove plantation, which represents the innovativeness of Bintan. Bintan’s soil contains high levels of bauxite, which is unsuitable for clove tree. However, an ingenious method was developed where a local tree accustomed to growing in bauxite was grafted with the shoot of the clove plant. Clove trees now grow successfully despite the less-than-ideal soil conditions found in the island.

Trikora Coast Approximately an hour ride away from Bintan Resorts, Trikora is a long stretch of separate beaches numbered from one to four. The waters are crystal clear with different shades of blue and green. Little sheltered huts that line the beaches are rented by locals during weekends for picnics. They make the perfect resting spot for you to enjoy the views and get some shelter from the sun! You can also visit a local boat-maker along the stretch and observe how traditional fishing boats are made. 32

Bahasa Indonesia is the lingua franca of the multicultural Indonesian archipelago for half a millennium. While the locals may have their own dialects, Bahasa Indonesia is known to the majority of the people there, and knowing a little of it would certainly make your Bintan experience more special!
