Action Alert for Ohio pediatricians Budget Background Work on Ohio’s biennial budget bill (HB 1) continues in June through the work of a conference committee. On June 3, the Ohio Senate passed a budget bill with dramatic changes from the draft proposed by Gov. Ted Strickland and passed by the Democrat-controlled Ohio House. The Senate faced an unexpected twist in May with an announcement from state budget officials that current fiscal year 2009 was falling short approximately $1 billion. This news came just days after the House passed the state’s $54 billion biennial budget bill with a predictable partisan vote (53-45) on April 29. The conference committee is forced to cut an additional $2.5 to $3.2 billion from the state spending plan after budget analysts updated revenue and Medicaid caseload estimates for June. House and Senate leaders and Gov. Strickland are vocal in their opposition to increasing revenue for the state’s budget. Additional cuts to valuable state programs is expected. Action Alert Funding for the Autism Education Diagnosis Pilot Program (ADEPP), a program of the Ohio AAP, is on the line as policymakers continue to cut key funding. ADEPP has engaged families, health-care professionals, child-care providers, educators and community leaders to promote early identification of autism and developmental delays through the use of evidence-based methods. In 18 months, ADEPP increased the supply of primary care professionals who screen for developmental delays like autism, created new community-based teams who can evaluate and diagnose children suspected of having autism, improved care collaboration to better offer timely, effective services for children with autism and other developmental delays, and crafted public awareness materials to support better screening and diagnosis See Budget…page 3

Ohio AAP Foundation Golf Outing looking for teams Gather your co-workers and gather your friends. It’s time for the Ohio AAP Foundation Golf Outing on Tuesday, September 22. Again this year, prizes will be awarded to the top hospital-based team and top Ohio AAP Committee-based team participating in the golf outing. The challenge has been set for each Children’s Hospital to find four golfers to represent them in this competition for bragging rights. Let’s find out who truly is the best Children’s Hospital, and also, the best Ohio AAP Committee. You can participate as an individual; a foursome; or if you are unable to golf, you can just attend the reception. Proceeds benefit the Ohio AAP Foundation and the Foundation’s three major initiatives – Reach Out and Read Ohio; Healthy, Strong and Ready for Teens: Parents and Doctors Working Together to Prepare Girls for Adolescence; and the My Story Foster Care Program. Gov. Strickland designates June teen immunization month Gov. Ted Strickland has designated June as “Teen Immunization Month” throughout the state of Ohio and urges businesses, community-based organizations and service groups to participate in activities and recognition events to increase the awareness of the importance of immunizing adolescents.

Gov. Strickland also encourages public and private health-care providers, parents, school systems, thirdparty payors and school-based health centers to advance the health of young people by ensuring on-time immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases. In his proclamation, Gov. Strickland says that vaccines are among the most successful and cost-effective public health tools for preventing disease and death. He states that vaccines are not just for infants, teens need vaccinations too. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends immunizations for 11-18 year-olds against tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, meningococcal disease, influenza, hepatitis B, chickenpox, and for girls, human papillomavirus. More than 2,300 cases of chickenpox, nearly 800 cases of pertussis and 40 cases of meningococcal disease were reported in Ohio in 2008.
