Publications and communications volunteer: Position Description About your Project: Published by BirdLife Australia, our yearly calendar is a vital fund and awareness raising tool, sold to thousands of Birdlife members, supporters and the general public through the BirdLife Australia online store and in newsagents around the country. About BirdLife Australia: BirdLife Australia is an independent not-for-profit organisation involved specifically in the conservation and preservation of birds and their habitat. The organisation undertakes various activities including scientific research and conservation projects, community engagement and public education and awareness-raising of threats to Australia's birds. BirdLife Australia also plays a strong advocacy role and provides significant input into conservation decisions of different levels of government. We differ from other fauna conservation organisations in that our priority is bird conservation, and as a national organisation we have a strong background in scientific research for the purpose of bird conservation. Although a national organisation, much of our work occurs at a regional scale and therefore strongly values community support and participation. Description of tasks: Assisting calendar production editor with production and marketing of the calendar as required, including duties such as: • Sourcing photos and illustrations and seeking permissions • Researching and writing calendar copy and marketing material • Graphic design • Editing and proofreading • Formulating marketing strategy Volunteer skills, experience and attributes (Key Selection Criteria): • • • • • •

Ability to research and prepare content utilising a range of communications tools Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, high-level writing and editing skills Excellent organisational skills, exceptional attention to detail and ability to set priorities and work to deadlines on multiple projects Ability to work both independently and also as a member of a team Proficiency in Microsoft Office Initiative and a genuine interest to learn and contribute to the team

Desirable (but not essential) • Prior work experience in either the publishing, communications or conservation sectors is an advantage • A strong interest and knowledge of conservation and ecology • Proficiency in the use of content management systems and software including Adobe Photoshop and Indesign Commitment: One day per week over three months (we ask volunteers to commit for a minimum 120 hours). Start date negotiable. Volunteer will be guided on day-to-day duties by staff. Location: BirdLife’s national office is based in Melbourne Benefits: Volunteers will benefit from practical experience in the daily operations of a not-for-profit conservation organisation.
