EFFECT OF ACUTE HEAT STRESS ON HSP70 mRNA EXPRESSION IN LIVER OF COMMERCIAL BROILER AND NIGERIAN LOCAL CHICKENS BY OKEDIRAN, OLUMAYOWA IBIDAPO MATRIC NO: 2007/0424

ABSTRACT This study was undertaken to find out the hsp70 mRNA expression in the liver of acutely heat stressed broilers and Nigerian local chicken. Temperature was monitored with the aid of hygrometer and was within the range of 32oC – 38oC, relative humidity was monitored with the aid of hygrometer and was within the range of 80%- 84%. Four chickens were used to carry out this experiment, two being

commercial broiler chicken while the other two were normal feather strain. Two treatments were administered on the two strains of birds, stressed and unstressed. With the stressed subjected to increase in room temperature. The increase in room temperature induced an increase in the hsp70 mRNA expression in the liver of normal feather strain subjected to heat stress without any effect on the commercial broilers and the normal feather chicken not subjected to heat treatment. Water was supplied to the birds ad libitum. The birds were sacrificed by ex-sanguination after which tissue samples were collected from the livers of the fours (4) birds. hsp 70 was expressed in the liver of the heat stressed Nigerian local chicken while it was not expressed in the liver of non heat-stressed Nigerian local chicken and both commercial broilers.
