Department Manager, Hurlburt Exchange Hurlburt Field – For military students, making multiple moves with their active-duty parents is just a part of life. In fact, military children typically move six to nine times by the time they’ve completed 12th grade, according to the Military Child Education Coalition.

Hurlburt Field Exchange’s You Made the Grade Program Rewards Military Students with giftcards and giveaways.

The Army & Air Force Exchange Service appreciates the sacrifices military students make and is rewarding young scholars who excel in the classroom with its You Made the Grade program, now in its 16th year. Students in first through 12th grades who maintain a B average or better are eligible to receive a coupon book filled with free offers and discounts from the Hurlburt Field Exchange.

“Military students face greater challenges than their civilian counterparts, including coping with separation from parents who are deployed and switching schools during moves to new duty stations,” said Main Store Manager, Barbara Ross. “These students deserve to be rewarded for their hard work, and for 16 years, the You Made the Grade program has been a favorite among military families.” The You Made the Grade booklet includes coupons for free food such as a Burrito Supreme or Taco Supreme from Taco Bell; a small chicken Philly sandwich at Charleys; a Chicken Po’Boy at Popeyes; and a bacon double cheeseburger and small fry from Burger King.

Students who make the grade will also score Snack Avenue coupons for a free fountain drink, including the Yeti frozen carbonated beverage, and a complimentary hot dog or roller grill item. Other offers include discounts on backpacks, shoes and more. Offers are valid through July 30. The booklet also includes an entry form for the You Made the Grade Scholars can enter to win semiannual Exchange gift cards worth sweepstakes. Scholars $2,000, $1,500 or $500. can enter to win Exchange gift cards worth $2,000, $1,500 or $500. Entries can be submitted twice a year, with drawings typically held in June and December. The most recent sweepstakes winners were students from WrightPatterson Air Force Base, Ohio; Camp Casey, South Korea; and Joint Base Andrews, Md.

Celebrating Military Youth: Enhancing their Future through S.T.E.M. by Lacey Allen

Children have a variety of environments to explore; meeting the needs of each unique personality naturally through nature. One of the favorite activities of children/youth appears to be the raw exploration area and investigation into species that inhabit it. Parents also experience the excitement of their children’s daily discoveries.

The intent of the military tax centers is to assist the junior members of our team with filing relatively simple taxes. There are many intuitive, free and self-help options now available to the Hurlburt field community, in addition to the traditional full-service tax preparation services available commercially. This year’s tax program will focus on making people aware of these self-service resources. We will have a self-help tax center, which will utilize self-service kiosks that will have trained tax volunteers for over-the-shoulder help as needed. Those that take advantage of these self-service options (discussed below) will become more aware of their own tax situation and able to maximize their own tax returns in the future. Tax season is here and W-2s are available on my pay. There are resources available for military families to ease the process of filing. In order to take advantage of the many free and low-cost tax prep options the Hurlburt Field tax program will move from operating a traditional tax center to a selfservice model. FOR ALL ACTIVE DUTY. Active duty members and their families can now log-on to militaryonesource.mil, register, and file both federal and state tax forms for free. http://www. militaryonesource.mil/pfm?content_id=268827. Trained tax consultants are available seven days a week from 0800-2200 EST at 800-342-9647, with extended hours during tax season. These tax consultants can also assist you later in the event of an IRS tax audit.

Call 884-7542 MONDAY, TUESDAY, or THURSDAY from 1100-1500 for more information

MILITARY RETIREES. Military retirees with an annual income of less than $62,000 can file for free at http://www.unitedway.org/myfreetaxes. Live chat and call in assistance is available. For those whose income exceeds the limit, some fees may apply. SELF-SERVICE TAX CENTER. Those that would like, may utilize our self-help tax-filing kiosks, which will be located at building 90320, which is the same building as the Airmen’s Attic, Okaloosa Tax Collector’s Office, and Drug Demand Reduction. The Tax Center hours are 1100-1500, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday starting 1 February - 14 April 2016. The kiosks will consist of a computer, and volunteers who can answer questions to aid filers in utilizing the services provided by Military One Source and Unitedway.org. The kiosks will be available by walking-in anytime between 1100 and 1500 starting 1 February 2016. When utilizing this option, please bring all tax documents such as W-2s, 1098s (education, interest, mortgage points), AND 1095 (Affordable Care Act documentation). DORM OUTREACH. For Airmen living in the Dorms, we will have information on our tax program posted in the dorms with phone numbers to call for tax advice to ensure our dorm residents are getting the support they need. AFFORDABLE CARE ACT REQUIREMENTS. This is the first year it is mandatory to prove you had health insurance. Proof for Active Duty members can be located on my pay. Proof of coverage for TRICARE members can be found on TRICARE’s website. For all others, contact your health insurance providers. Paper statements should also be mailed to all covered personnel.
