July 2017 Calendar of Events Baton Rouge Region July 5 (Wednesday): “Christmas in July” It is winter somewhere, but not here!! GO is celebrating “Christmas in July” for the purpose of giving GO members an opportunity to sell their homemade wares and to help raise money for the purpose of giving stuffed backpacks with the basic essential items as gifts for homeless men at Christmas. Come by and enjoy Christmas snacks, to buy some great homemade gifts and to donate to the cause (you will be given a tax write off form for the donation)! If you would like to have a table to sell your merchandise, please call the GO office. Start Time: 11:00 am – 1:00 pm Hospital Classroom RSVP REQUIRED July 12 (Wednesday): BREAKFAST BUNCH: “Osteoporosis 101 & Fall Prevention” Presented by: Gay Story, MD Should I worry about osteoporosis? What are the symptoms and how is it detected? Over 50 million Americans are thought to have osteoporosis. Estimates suggest it leads to over 2 million broken bones each year, generating nearly $19 billion in medical costs in the United States alone. But while all these statistics are scary, the good news is that there are very effective treatments for the disease, as well as opportunities to decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis. Dr. Story will speak on the causes and the treatment of osteoporosis. She will also discuss fall and fracture prevention. 9:30 am - 11:00 am Hospital Classroom Snack Provided RSVP REQUIRED July 14 (Friday): ROAD TRIP: “Going to Gretna Tour” $30.00 per Person (includes transportation and fees – lunch on your own) Depart from Ochsner Plaza II: 8:00 am Return Time: 5:00 pm We will stroll through one of Louisiana's largest national historic register districts, Gretna's downtown historic district, and discover the unique architecture and landmarks. Settled by German immigrants in 1836, Gretna is steeped in history and intrigue. The Gretna Historical Society was founded in 1969 in order to preserve the historical buildings and traditions of the City of Gretna. We will tour the old historical buildings like the White House, Gretna Green Black Smith Shop, Kitty Strehle House and the Louisiana State Fire Museum. We will dine at the Gattuso’s Restaurant (lunch on your own). After lunch, we will tour the German-American Cultural Center which traces the lives of the German Immigrants. July 27 (Thursday): Movie Review: “Dunkirk” AMC THEATER 16040 Hatter Drive Please pay at the Movie Theater GO members will meet at the theater at 9:30 am $5.00 per person- admission $4.00 per person – small drink & small popcorn & fruitie tootie snack. Allied soldiers from Britain, Belgium, Canada, and France are surrounded by the German Army on the beaches of Dunkirk and evacuated in Operation Dynamo between May 26 and June 4 1940, during the early stages of the Second World War. RSVP REQUIRED

Concerns about Falling? Tuesday, July 11 Many older adults experience concerns about falling and restrict their activities. A MATTER OF BALANCE is an award-winning 8 week program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels. The class is free.
