What are you doing? ELLOISE There’s a hurricane a’comin’. SALLY A hurricane A’COMIN’? ELLOISE Yeah! In the south, when something really big is about to happen, they put the “Ah” in front of it. SALLY Mother! We live in the middle of Arizona. Where did you get this crazy weather report? ELLOISE I was talking to Gladys Feldman this morning. [HESITATING] SALLY And? ELLOISE And she woke up with a leg cramp. Need I say more? SALLY Is this the same Gladys Feldman who predicted a blizzard in the Bahamas? ELLOISE What’s your point? ELLOISE Don’t patronize me, Sally. SALLY I’m not patronizing you, Mother. I’m A’Mockin’ you! Listen, mother, even if there was a hurricane coming, why should we be so fearful. Do you not remember Pastor Herman’s message last Sunday? ELLOISE Vaguely. I’m lucky if I can remember the names of my own children. SALLY Mother... he spoke on Fear. Remember? He was speaking in regards to second Timothy chapter one, verse seven - “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” ELLOISE Oh, yeah. Well, I can relate to the power and love but as for the sound mind... SALLY Mother, we have no reason to fear anything. Think about it. God himself created the wind and rain. He brings the hurricanes, the rains and winds that seem so fierce and threatening. However, He’s in control. ELLOISE I understand what you’re saying Sally, but it’s so hard sometimes trying not to be afraid... especially people my age. SALLY I know, mother. I know there are times that you become alarmed and fearful. I’ve seen it in your eyes these last few years as you’re growing older. As we grow older we begin to feel as if we’re losing our ability to control the things in life. Do you remember when I was a little girl and the terrible thunderstorms would come? I would be scared to death. I’d go running to your room and stand crying in the doorway. You would take me in your arms and calm me down. You’d tell me, “There’s nothing to be afraid of sweetheart. It’s only the Lord reminding us of His wondrous and mighty creation.” And then you’d tuck me back into bed and sit with me until I fell back to sleep. ELLOISE Yeah. What precious memories.

SALLY Mother, the Lord is always there for us, wanting us to come running to Him when we’re afraid. He knows there will be times that we become afraid, but He also wants us to come to Him during those times, not running in the opposite direction losing our mind. He desires to hear what makes our heart fearful. He wants to calm our minds just like you did when I was a little girl. ELLOISE You’re right, sweetheart. You’re very right. It was foolish of me to get all worked up and afraid. I’m not afraid any more. SALLY That’s great mother. Now, if you don’t mind, help me clear all your equipment off my counter so I can get dinner started? ELLOISE AND SALLY BEGIN TO GATHER THE SHOVEL AND BOARDS OFF THE CENTER BLOCK. AS SALLY LIFTS A BOARD FROM THE COUNTER SHE GRIMISES WITH PAIN WHILE GRABBING AT HER SHOULDER. SALLY Ooooo! ELLOISE What’s the matter, dear? SALLY Oh, my shoulder is beginning to really hurt. It’s just a touch of something. ELLOISE [QUICKLY RUSHING OFF SCENE.] I’ll be right back. SALLY Mother, where are you going? ELLOISE [STOPPING TO REPLY TO SALLY.] I’m going to call Gladys. I want to find out what it means before it’s too late. SALLY Mother! What were we just talking about? ELLOISE Hey, I’m not afraid. I just want to find out how much time we have before the next blizzard will hit.
