SMU NEWS Interpreting Services Newsletter

Faculty of Science In this issue: Year End Invoice Date Featured Resource Did you know

As a higher academic institution, SMU strongly believes in ongoing professional growth. With the purpose to enhance the skills of the pool of interpreters working in the SMU Faculty of Science and ultimately the level of service to the University community. Remember, “Professional development is a process, not an event.”

Year End Invoice Date Where has the time gone? It feels like yesterday we were celebrating the New Year. The fiscal year end for SMU is March 31. It is important to submit invoices prior to year end for assignments that occur before March 31. Please submit your invoices before March 31. This will be immensely helpful. I will also be sending friendly reminder emails to those who have outstanding invoices from 2015/2016.

Did you know: Over the years vocabulary lists have been developed for signs and concepts specifically used in this setting with Dr. Campbell? If you’re interested in receiving a copy of these lists, please contact Ashley. Note: The majority of vocab is in text not ASL at this time.

Leap Year, what’s that all about?

Something about public presentations can provoke nerves in the best of us; and then there’s interpreting for a Deaf professional’s presentation. Right! There are many things interpreters can control in this situation. Preparing, meeting the presenter in advance, trusting the team (including the presenter), remembering to breathe, engaged feedback session, and recording the work to review later. Professionals who present are typically well-versed in public presenting and want to inform the audience about their work in a dynamic fashion. Here’s one example of a Deaf scientist presenting his work. Note: the interpretation seems to be read verbatim, best to turn it off.
